It is called The Igbo Farm Village and it is the only structure of its kind worldwide. The Igbo Farm Village is a part of the American Frontier Culture Museum of Virginia. It is where the Igbo gather every year to celebrate festivals, display masquerades and other cultural events. This was done to preserve the cultural heritage, and to make a lifestyle that resembles that of an Igbo village as it had existed centuries ago. Its walls were constructed with mud, the insides were done with clay plaster, rooms were designed with clay pots, mats, etc. Professor Akuma-Kalu Njoku, an associate professor of Folklore Studies and Anthropology at the Western Kentucky University, was the man behind the project. He came to Nigeria with Eric Bryan, another Museum staff, Ray Wright, and the cultural committee of monuments, and they shipped thatch and other traditional tools from Nigeria to America. Through the help of Reverend Father Maduawuchukwu Ogbonna and Doctor Kanayo K. Odelugba, several people from different parts of the United States were recruited as volunteers to work on this piece of land; children and adults including white people. They used sand to mould blocks. While they worked, others cooked traditional meals, and in the evenings, they occasionally played moonlit games. One of the organizers of this project, Basil Okafor said, "In due time, we will not see these kind of houses in Igbo land, but you have to travel to the United States to see our mud houses". Many Tourists use the opportunity to look deeply into the attractions in the Igbo Village without having a need to travel down to Nigeria. During the transatlantic slave trade, thousands of enslaved Igbo people came directly to Virginia via shipping ports in Calabar and Bonny. Igboland was the principal source of the labour force in the tobacco plantation in Virginia in 1740s. At a point, they outnumbered and eventually replaced their Irish indentured counterparts. The Igbo labourers produced the tobacco that became the mainstay of the Virginian economy. The Igbo also provided the labour in the Black Belt that made cotton king, and they continued to contribute to nation building and to the development of the frontier culture in the United States. Thus, the Igbo were among the first effective settlers Anglo-America, and among the first groups to cross the Cumberland Gap to open the gateway for the territorial expansion of the United States. Therefore, the building of the Igbo Farm Village in Staunton, Virginia, like the English, German, and Irish Farmsteads, built by American Frontier Culture Foundation, is a tangible recognition of the contribution of the Igbo people to the first English permanent settlement of Virginia, to American nation building in the United States, and to the development of the greater American frontier culture.
