Over the years I keep wondering what would have become of Nigerians today, if we had kept killing our future leaders out of ignorance. What could have become of us, if we had continued to frustrate the life of women after passing through 9 months stress, just to have their babies killed all out of ignorance? What could have become of us if we had continue to stain our hands with the blood of innocent children? Thank God that was all in the past, thank God those years of ignorance have gone. Thank God we all can now fully enjoy this great gift of God to mankind (Twins). Being a twin, I keep wondering what could have been the fate of I and my twin sister? What could have been the fate of my poor mother who was not able to bear another baby after us?. All thanks to God for the grace and wisdom he blessed this great woman (Mary Slessor of blessed memory) with. Who took it upon herself to bring justice to innocent children, who were unjustly killed for lack of knowledge. God rest her soul! Until death (the respecter of nobody) took her on 13th January 1915, Mary Mitchell Slessor was a devoted Christian who was bent on rescuing the women and children's right. How I wish death didn't visit her, who knows she would have done more for us in Nigeria. Who knows women would have fully known their right through her help. But who can question Death? Who could have told him that many Nigerian's still need Mary, for them to be liberated from mental slavery? But wait! Who would have still be praying and wishing for what was seen as a taboo and an abomination in Nigeria if not for this great woman? So many dreams would have been wasted, so many hopes would have lost, so many generations would have ended. Thank God Nigerians were very much appreciative, to have secured her grave and guarded it so well till this day. Her cemetery which was built by the Presbyterian Church and have been maintained and turned to a tourist center since then. In order to honor her and appreciate her for her good deeds, no doubt good work pays. Nigerians will never forget her, she will always be remembered even in the generations to come. No doubt Mary is in a better place, so as we continue to pray for her soul to keep resting, I encourage everyone reading this to learn from the story of this great woman, always bear in mind that good work pays if not now later. The novel has generated the most examination, critical response, and literary criticism. It is studied globally in the European continent, India, and the continent of North America. This similar status and repute was also achieved in Australia and Oceania. Follow Israel fears meetings between senior Fatah and Hamas representatives Recent indications point to an unlikely but evident newly-found cooperation between Fatah and Hamas, and this development is a source of real concern for Israel. Following the threats of the Palestinian Authority to cease security coordination with Israel’s IDF, a collaboration between Hamas and Fatah could provide Hamas the political leverage to bolster its terror activities at the Occupied West Bank in a reinvigorated bid to resist Israeli annexation. Hamas, an acronym for the Arabic that means Islamic Resistance Movement, is a Palestinian Sunni-Islamic fundamentalist militant organization. It has a social service wing, Dawah, and a military wing, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades. The short-term goal of Hamas was to liberate Palestine, including modern-day Israel, from Israeli occupation. The long-term aim sought to establish an Islamic state from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea. Hamas won the 2006 Palestinian legislative elections and assumed administrative control of Gaza Strip and West Bank. Both regimes - the Ramallah and Gaza government regard themselves as the sole legitimate government of the Palestinian National Authority. Fatah, formerly the Palestinian National Liberation Movement, is a Palestinian nationalist social-democratic political party and the largest faction of the confederated multi-party Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and the second-largest party in the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC). The period from March to December 2006 was marked by tensions when Palestinian Authority commanders affiliated to Fatah refused to take orders from the Hamas-led Palestinian Authority government. Tensions further grew between the two Palestinian factions after they failed to reach a deal to share government power. 2007 saw what is widely known as the battle of Gaza. As a result of the battle, Hamas got complete control of Gaza. The pro-Fatah view is, that it was a plain military coup by Hamas. The pro-Hamas view is, that the US drew up a plan to arm Fatah cadres to forcefully remove Hamas from power in Gaza. The West Bank is located to the west of the Jordan River. It is a landlocked territory, bordered by Jordan to the east and Israel to the south, west, and north. The Gaza Strip, on the other hand, is a small boot-shaped territory along the Mediterranean coast between Egypt and Israel. Israel, the United States, and the European Union classify, either in whole or in part, Hamas as a terrorist organization. Hamas is a U.S.-designated terrorist organization that has killed hundreds of Israeli citizens, as well as Americans, in suicide bombings and other terrorist attacks. Hamas has been in a long-running battle in EU courts to remove its terrorist listing. In the latest ruling, a top EU court found Hamas could be labelled a terrorist organization. Last year, a top EU court rejected an appeal by Hamas for the bloc to delist the Palestinian group as a terrorist organization to allow it to regain access to frozen assets. The ruling went on to state that Hamas is not a sovereign state and could not rely on the principle of non-interference to annul the EU's decision. Furthermore, it ruled that Hamas had not shown that its political and armed wings are separate. An explicit cooperation between the rival groups of Hamas and Fatah seems to have been kindled by the Israeli government’s announcement to formally apply sovereignty on the West Bank and parts of Jordan. On June 15 2020, Hamas Deputy Chief Saleh Al-Arouri said Hamas is prepared to work with Fatah to face Israel’s annexation plan. In a televised interview with Al-Aqsa TV, Al-Arouri said: “We are ready to put our differences behind us and work together with Fatah and the Palestinian Authority to face the annexation plan.” So, it seems to be a case of the bigger picture, or a common enemy. The Hamas Deputy Chief went on to stress that his movement would use every means at their disposal to resist the planned annexation which was set to be brought into force on 1 July. “We have been in contact with all the Palestinian factions in order to reach a consensus on a joint national programme against the Israeli plan,” he said. While the kickoff of the Israeli sovereignty application has been delayed, Israeli government officials affirm the plan is still on course. The Hamas Political Bureau Deputy Head, Saleh Al-Arouri- who Israel fingers as the main figure behind violent and armed attacks in the West Bank- recently held an online meeting with Fatah’s Central Committee Secretary General, Jibril Rajoub. The conclave was followed by another meeting between Fatah’s official responsible for the Gaza files, Ahmed Helles, and Hama’s Head of National Relations, Husam Badran. Israel believes these meetings signal a marked end to the relative calm in the West Bank as Hamas gets the blessing of Fatah to launch resistance operations even though the Palestinian leader, Mahmoud Abbas is believed to be opposed to the return of armed conflict in the region. The recently fledging camaraderie between Hamas and Fatah is by no means an isolated event. Brotherly handshakes has passed between the two rival movements over the past decade, whether at a meeting in Cairo or at an outing in Moscow; but an explicit unity continues to elude them until now. Ordinarily, many will turn their nose up at the possibility of unification between the rival groups but Israel believes the recent challenge posed by Netanyahu’s planned annexation is very likely to be the final straw to break the camel’s back. Israeli media outlets has been on top of this development by dutifully reporting on the Fatah-Hamas reunion, especially taking note of the glaring fact that none of the parties involved in the meetings released public statements about them. To Israel, that’s a worrying sign of a cautious conclave. The irony is that Israel had actually encouraged the rival groups to meet. Israel may have encouraged talks between the leaderships of Hamas and Fatah as a reaction to the Palestinian Authority’s decision to end security coordination with the IDF, but did the Jewish state anticipate phrases such as “a common struggle in the field” to be used in those talks? Rajoub declared, “We have no enemy but Israel” and Al-Arouri seemed happy with the opportunity and called for a joint struggle in the West Bank. All the same, Middle East analysts believe that Mahmoud Abbas is most likely to be staunchly opposed to have Hamas site its green flags in every nook and cranny of the occupied territories and the resumption armed struggles in the West Bank. More so, an unhindered coalition government between Hamas and Fatah is far-fetched which cast doubts on the longevity of a reunion between the rival groups beyond the common goal of fighting Israeli annexation. The speed with which agreement between the two movements was achieved has surprised Israel’s security services, although they would not have been blind to the possibility as soon as Benjamin Netanyahu announced his annexation plan. Israel is rightly concerned about a collaboration between Hamas and Fatah, no matter how short-lived their handshake. Israelis does not put as much stock on what is said openly on the Palestinian media as they do on what happens on the field. This is why Israel is mindful of the “no press statement” post-meetings between the top Hamas and Fatah officials. What happens on the ground will also depend to a large extent on if the Palestinian Authority decides to authorize Hamas to operate on the West Bank. Hamas was established in 1987, and has its origins in Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood movement, which had been active in the Gaza Strip since the 1950s and gained influence through a network of mosques and various charitable and social organizations. Jibril Rajoub of Fatah is reportedly poised to succeed Mahmoud Abbas but Israeli discussion groups say he is not the Palestinian leader’s choice of successor. Rajoub is also promoting himself as the only man in Fatah able to reach an understanding with Hamas. Rajoub’s brother, Sheikh Nayef Rajoub, by the way, is a senior Hamas executive official in the West Bank. On the other hand, Al-Arouri of Hamas is polished and intelligent, and quickly understood the strategic gains of a handshake with Fatah’s Rajoub. Now, Arouri is confident his movement will have the leverage to conduct large demonstrations in the West Bank, something which Fatah has been unable to do. With a union with Fatah, Hamas will have political cover for its activities and its foot soldiers may even be immune to arrest by the Palestinian security forces. The Hamas government of 2016 is the Gaza-based faction of the Palestinian government and is a de facto third Hamas government, ruling over the Gaza Strip since the split of the Palestinian National Authority in 2007. It is evident that the last thing in Israel’s wish bucket is a unified Hamas-Fatah movement. Israel sees such a development as a sure-sign of impending coordinated campaigns of resistance which will predictably include armed attacks in the West Bank. Magu is currently being inves­tigated by a presidential panel led by Justice Ayo Salami over allegations levelled against him by the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami.. Malami, in a memo to President Muhammadu Buhari, had recommended Magu’s sack. He anchored his recommendation on sev­eral grounds ranging from diversion of recovered loot to insubordination and mis­conduct. One of the allegations against Magu is the dis­crepancies in the figures of assets recovered. It was said that while he claimed that the commis­sion had recovered N980 billion worth of assets, what is in the account is less than N100 billion. Shortly after Magu’s ar­rest and detention, some protesters took to the streets of Abuja to demand the ar­rest of Tinubu over two bullion vans, believed to be conveying cash at his resi­dence on the eve of the 2019 general election. In February, 2019, viral pictures on social media had shown the two bullion vans being driven into Tinubu’s residence as many people looked on outside the com­pound. In response to the con­troversy generated by the incident, Tinubu had said the bullion vans contained money belonging to him and not the government. He had said: “Excuse me, is it my money or govern­ment money? I don’t work for the government. “I am not in an agency of government, and let any­one come out to say I have collected contract from the government of President Muhammadu Buhari or the APC in the last five years. They should prove it. “I am on my own and I am committed to my party. So, even if I have money to spend on my premises, what is your headache? “If I don’t represent any agency of government and I have money to spend – if I like, I give it to the people free of charge as long as it is not to buy votes. “Who are those moni­toring my house or bullion vans? They must be mis­chief makers because they report falsehood. They are liars and idlers.” However, a credible source in the presidency told Daily Independent that beyond what was publicly stated in Malami’s memo to the president, one major issue against Magu is his perceived selective investi­gation and refusal to investi­gate the bullion vans allega­tions even though President Buhari, who has made the war against corruption one of the three cardinal agenda of his administration, had given him “unfettered ac­cess to go all out and probe anyone irrespective of his status in the society”. Daily Independent re­called that in 2018, Magu had challenged those ques­tioning Tinubu’s source of wealth to write a petition and see if he would not act on it. Magu had said: “You know what? If you are really interested, write a petition and see whether I won’t act. “Go and write a petition and substantiate in the pe­tition and find out if I won’t act. It is not for us to listen to people on radio and begin to act. “Yes, we have intelligence but the surest way to get ac­tion is to go and write a pe­tition and substantiate the contents of the petition and see whether I will not act.” However, despite several petitions on the need to in­vestigate the content of the bullion vans, Magu failed to act for unknown reasons. When he was queried by journalists in November 2019 about the petition, he responded swiftly: “Do you want me to start discussing Tinubu’s petition here? No, I can’t. Next question.” Speaking with our corre­spondent, our source said though two petitions were written against Tinubu on the bullion vans, Magu was instructed to go ahead with his investigation and he set up two teams to probe the two petitions. “He was instructed to go ahead with the two peti­tions and he actually set up two teams to investigate it. The outcome of the investi­gation is what he has failed to reveal. “I want to believe with Magu’s exit, the new EFCC chairman will continue from where he stopped and I won’t be surprised if the bullion vans petitions are revisited. “Nigerians want to know and the administration wants to prove a point that it is not selective in its an­ti-graft war.” When contacted, a close associate of Tinubu said they believe that the protest in Abuja on the bullion vans was sponsored by some indi­viduals to embarrass Tinu­bu. He, however, said they didn’t know those behind it. When asked if Tinubu would not be affected in anyway, he said Tinubu had nothing to do with Magu’s appointment and would not be affected even if he was removed. “It has nothing to do with Asiwaju and it will not affect him in anyway. “In the first place, he was not the one who appointed Magu and he never recom­mended him for the position. “So, if those who appoint­ed him say it is time for him to go, what is Asiwaju’s busi­ness with that?” On the bullion vans al­legations, he said: “Asiwa­ju has stated his position that he is no longer in gov­ernment and he has not received any contract from the government in the last five years. So, that settles the issue.” Garba Shehu, Senior Spe­cial Assistant to the Presi­dent on Media and Publicity, on Tuesday said he had not been briefed on who suc­ceeds Ibrahim Magu, sus­pended acting chairman of EFCC. There has been no official statement from the presi­dency since Monday when Magu was arrested and brought before a presiden­tial panel headed by Justice Ayo Salami in Abuja. There has been confusion and anxiety in the commis­sion’s headquarters over who takes over as acting chairman. The anxiety stems from the fact that Magu’s suspen­sion has not been officially communicated to the head of operations, Mohammed Umar, who, according to the EFCC Act, is the next in command to the acting chairman and acts in his absence. Also, there appears a jostling between Umar and the commission’s secretary, Olanipekun Olukoyede, over who replaces the suspended acting chairman. When contacted by Dai­ly Independent, Shehu said he had no knowledge of the development as he had not been briefed. “I don’t know who takes over. I have not been briefed,” he said. Follow India has grown weary and wary of China’s increasing aggression over the disputed India-China borders The 2020 China–India skirmishes are part of an ongoing military standoff between China and India. Since 5 May 2020, Chinese and Indian troops have reportedly engaged in aggressive melee, face-offs, and skirmishes at locations along the Sino-Indian border. The clashes culminated in a melee fighting on 15/16 June 2020 which resulted in the deaths of 20 Indian soldiers (including an officer) and 43 Chinese soldiers (including an officer) although Chinese authorities denied the casualty figures on its side. The June deadly brawl indicates a significant escalation of conflicts between the two nuclear-armed Asian giants over border demarcations and disputes. India faces trade imbalance heavily in favor of China. The two countries failed to resolve their border dispute and Indian media outlets have repeatedly reported Chinese military incursions into Indian territory. Both countries have steadily established military infrastructure along the border areas. India says China’s “premeditated” attack on its troops in the strategically important Galwan Valley in Ladakh is a violation of the rules of engagement that has managed to prevent bloodshed in the region for nearly five decades. India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Chinese counterpart President Xi Jinping has met eighteen times since Modi’s election as Prime Minister of India in 2014. Until now, both countries have managed to respect and navigate their critically complex relationship peacefully. After the Galwan Valley brawl that left scores of Indian soldiers dead, the people of India are forced to reconsider their country’s relationship with China. India will be loath to easily forget their country’s crushing defeat at the hands of the People’s Liberation Army during the 1962 border conflict with China. While the 1962 defeat inspired a shift in India’s foreign policy from idealism to realpolitik together with considerable advancement in its military and regional concerns, the country remained untangled with the United States of America. India’s former Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru had fomented the Chini Bhai Bhai (India and China are brothers) idealism that helped foster the pursuit of peace between the two countries. But as China betrayed India in the 1960s, fast forward to 2020, and it seems China has once again stabbed India in the back. India is currently on a foreign policy precipice where it can no longer afford to sit on the fence or have its feet on land and water. As the country works towards de-escalation of conflict with China, the scale of recent killing ensures that business-as-usual is no longer an option. Washington’s desire for stronger ties with India is a well-known fact, and China’s increasing provocation of India thrusts the country in a more favorable position to clasp arms with the US, unlike the 1960s when India was reluctant to gravitate towards the United States. The US has long courted India as an economic partner and counterweight to an expansionist and assertive China. India has hesitated to explicitly align with the United States apparently to avoid provoking China even as the Indian Prime Minister has energetically pursued improved diplomacy with America. Several scholars have observed that India has simply morphed its cold-war strategy of “non-alignment” with the US to “multi-alignment” with both the US and China, which implicitly denotes aversion to alliances. China’s intensified aggravation of India effectively forces India to yet morph this strategy into an explicit alliance with America. In recent years, India has steadily moved towards a more genial partnership with the US which is widely understood as a broader push to counter-balance China’s growing power and status both economically and on the world’s stage. To wit, India has only recently joined security groups such as QUAD and JAI with like-minded democracies like America, Japan, and Australia. Modi has also spearheaded enhanced relations with Israel- a notable ally of the United States- while moving slowly but steadily deeper into America’s circle. As more and more countries expressed muted disappointment of China’s secretive handling of the coronavirus pandemic, India took a clear stand, albeit in a subtle manner, against the Chinese government’s handling of the highly infectious virus. Indian media peddled an anti-China narrative often calling for a boycott of Chinese products. Political figures also pointed out China’s lack of transparency in handling the outbreak and its attempts to silence whistle-blowers, going so far as questioning the Chinese model of governance. India, along with Australia and the European Union, imposed certain restrictions on Chinese investments in their countries, further demonstrating this subtle approach. Unsurprisingly, India’s subtle demonstrations did not go unnoticed by China. The Global Times, a state-owned Chinese news media published an editorial in May warning India off of the US and not to allow itself to be used as a pawn against China. Brookings scholar Tanvi Madan went as far as saying the June 16 border brawl that claimed the lives of Indian soldiers was China’s way of putting India at its place due to India’s persistent cavorting with the US. “As US-China tensions escalate over a wide range of issues covering almost every realm, some are predicting that the world's two largest economies are about to enter a new Cold War. At this juncture, India needs to be careful about being involved in the US-China rivalry,” the Global Times article said. However, the deadly Galwan Valley attack on Indian soldiers appears to be driving India deeper into the waiting embrace of the United States regardless of China’s warnings. The “ambush” that left more than twenty Indian soldiers dead is bound to radically shift India’s attitude towards China. With China’s army significantly larger and more financed than India’s, sustained response to Chinese aggression means India will have to utilize its military, economic, and political options. Indian government officials had said the deadly brawl will not impact trade relation between India and China, but various types of action were taken on the economic front including cancellation and additional scrutiny of certain contracts with Chinese firms, and calls were also made to stop the entry of the Chinese into strategic markets in India such as the telecom sector. India has recently placed a ban on 59 Chinese apps including TikTok, WeChat, Helo. India is clearly at a point where it can no longer pretend to be in love with multiple spouses. In the context of its relation with China, India needs likeminded allies and the recent border skirmishes will force India to abandon its former “non-alignment” stance in favor of explicit ties with the West.
