Welcome to mjventertainment.blogspot.com: Forgery Case: We are being assaulted - Senate 11 hours ago SHARE THIS NEWS! Facebook Twitter WhatsApp Email – Nigerian senate has responded to the statement issued by the Secretary to the Federal Government, Mr David Babachir Lawal that the Senate is not the one on trial – Senate says Saraki, Ekweremadu not mentioned by petitioners  Bukola Saraki and Ike Ekweremadu are on trial for allege forgery The Nigerian senate has responded to the statement issued by the Secretary to the Federal Government, Mr David Babachir Lawal that the Senate is not the one on trial in the Forgery case instituted by the Attorney General of the Federation against the Senate President and his Deputy. The SGF explained this in a statement released on Wednesday, June 29, stated that a case of forgery is always brought upon individuals. Lawal stressed the fact that a case like certificate forgery was the reason for the resignation of a Speaker of the House of Representatives, Salisu Buhari. But speaking through its spokesperson, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, the Senate said it disagree with the position of the SGF and maintain it earlier stand that “it is the Senate that is the target of the present attempt to intimidate the legislature to force a leadership change in the Senate.” Speaking further, he said “Mr. Babachir Lawal should tell us how reasonable it is to conclude that when the President of Nigeria and the Vice President are being jointly tried in a suit whose outcome can remove them from office, it is not the Buhari Government that is being targeted. “It is also imperative to clearly state that contrary to the claim by the SGF, neither the Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki nor Senator Ike Ekweremadu were mentioned by the petitioners, the statements by those interviewed by the police or even the police report. READ ALSO: Kwara APC attacks Presidency over Saraki “Meanwhile, let us refreshen Mr. Lawal’s  memory about the facts of the 1999 case. It is obvious that the Senate President and his deputy are not being accused of certificate forgery as it happened in ex-Speaker Salisu Buhari’s case. Therefore, nobody should compare an apple with orange. Also, neither Saraki nor Ekweremadu is below the age requirement for their present  position as it was alleged in the Buhari case. Attempts to make the two situations look similar is to present all Nigerians as having no sense of history. “We also know that nobody can be accused of forging his own signature. The executive is in no position to determine what is the correct Standing Orders of the Senate. The Senate President and his Deputy were as at the morning of the June 9, 2015 inauguration of the Senate mere Senators-elect and could therefore not have been in a position to influence any alteration in the rule book. “The Senate as an institution, and indeed the National Assembly, has spoken about their understanding of the present assault on their independence by the executive’. We maintain that this trial is a design by the Executive to criminalize the internal affairs of the Senate to create a distraction for the leadership of the Senate, force a leadership change and cow the legislators.  READ ALSO: I’m witnessing against Saraki as a member of the Unity Forum’ “Those behind this plot find this trial more expedient and important than finding tangible solutions to the multi-various socio-economic problems bedeviling the country. However, we are sure they will fail in this attempt. We only hope they will allow the judiciary to truly and creditably perform its duties and give independent verdict on the case.   Want to read news with extra convenience? Install our app from HERE

Welcome to mjventertainment.blogspot.com: Issued on 29-06-2016 • Modified 29-06-2016 to 16:02 Luxleaks whistleblowers given suspended sentences, journalist acquitted by RFI Edouard Perrin (L), Raphaël Halet (C) and Antoine Delcourt (R) John Thys/AFP Two French whistleblowers have been given suspended sentences and a journalist acquitted in the Luxleaks trial over revelations of tax-dodging deals between multinational companies and the Luxembourg authorities. Their lawyers had already declared their intention to appeal, claiming that their clients acted in the public interest. Antoine Deltour, 31, Raphaël Halet, 40, were found guilty of leaking documents belonging to their former employer Price Waterhouse Coopers but journalist Edouard Perrin, who broke the story in the French TV programme Cash Investigation, was found not guilty. Deltour was given a 12-month suspended prison sentence and a 1,500-euro fine, while Halet was given a nine-month suspended sentence and a 1,000-euro fine. The 30,000 pages of confidential documents they passed to the press revealed that multinationals, including Amazon, Apple, Ikea, Pepsi, McDonald's and BNP-Paribas, negotiated "tax rulings" that allowed them to pay as little as one percent tax if they registered in the Grand Duchy. European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker was Luxembourg's prime minister at the time. Defendants to fight on for other whistleblowers Luxembourg's legal authorities charged Deltour and Halet with stealing documents from the accounting firm's database, revealing business secrets, violation of professional secrecy and money-laundering, which could have meant 10 years in jail. Perrin, who was in the US at the time the verdict was read, was charged with complicity. Prosecutors called for 18-month prison sentences and an unspecified fine. So the sentence was relatively lenient but not lenient enough for the defendants and their lawyers. Ahead of the verdict they said they would appeal even if just a one-euro fine was imposed, because they wanted to establish jurisprudence for future whistleblowers. Scandal put pressure on court The leak hit international headlines in 2014 when International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) shared 28,000 documents with international media in the Luxleaks dump. The uproar created by the revelations put pressure on governments to chase up tax-dodgers and on Luxembourg to review the issuing of tax rulings. French Finance Minister Michel Sapin, who has netted billions from tax-dodgers largely thanks to whistleblowers, declared his support for Deltour in front of the French parliament in April, saying that his action had "ended the opacity that prevents European countries from knowing the tax situation certain big companies in Luxembourg". The European parliament set up a special committee to look into tax evasion following the leaks and Deltour was invited to address it in June 2015. NGOs, including Oxfam France, campaigned for acquittal and demonstrated in front of the court and Luxembourg's embassy in Paris on Wednesday.

Welcome to mjventertainment.blogspot.com: The Facade of America By Nick Hodge Debt, Freedom and Facebook On my drive in to the office the other day, I heard a commercial that unwittingly encapsulated some of what's wrong with America's current mentality. The commercial was for a new Nokia phone that boasted an incredible camera. The gist was that instead of paying for a front-row seat to the summer's hottest concert, you could buy the cheap seats and take zoomed-in pictures. Why would you want to pay the bare minimum for concert tickets, but still take amazing pictures? To fool your Facebook friends, of course. And the commercial made that crystal clear. It didn't matter if you were able to afford and enjoy the concert from close proximity... as long as your friends think you did. I've been talking about the Facebook facade for years now. But why does it exist? Why do we need to create an online aura of ourselves that's only marginally based in reality? Is it because the majority of us simply can't afford tickets in a closer row than M? Or is it because Americans are so accustomed to living beyond their means, that they'll strive to keep up the ruse of keeping up at all costs? Has the American middle class entirely morphed into what John Steinbeck called "temporarily embarrassed millionaires"? The Nokia Lumina 1020 retails for $759. Advertisement Gold Investment Turns Every $1 into $34 There's a radical way to play gold that 99% of mainstream investors have never heard about before. And here's the thing: You don't have to touch any hyped-up gold mining stocks... ETFs... options... or even gold coins or bars to do it. It's a unique gold strategy that's been proven to safely generate huge gains off gold... and for some savvy people has even built large multimillion-dollar fortunes. Click here for full details. Debt Facade The same day I heard the phone commercial, I stepped onto an elevator that contained two men talking. "I just don't know how they afford it," I heard one of them say. I assumed it was business talk, but then he continued, "All my neighbors have all this stuff. Cars, toys, vacations. How do they pay for it?" The other one shook his head. "Well, that's a nice area, Bob," he said. We reached the lobby and the doors opened. I turned to them both and simply said, "Debt," before continuing to my destination. "You got that right," I heard one of them say behind me. The same debt one of my sister's friends uses to pay for all her shoes, handbags, and an annual trip to somewhere with a palm tree. Privately she's bankrupt, and about to declare it, but you should see the pictures of that stuff on Facebook. Or take my fiancé's newly married friends who "own" a $300,000 home and five cars, one of which approaches six figures... There are plenty of pictures of the cars on Facebook (no word on if they're taken with a Nokia Lumina), but there are no photos of their back tax statements from the IRS. Freedom Facade Maybe our penchant for fakeness stems from our government, which has been feeding us all fraud for years. The Fourth Amendment of the Constitution reads: "The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated." Yet somehow New York is stopping and frisking — without warrant or cause — thousands of people per year. Is that not violating? The Second Amendment goes like this: "A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed." Multiple states have passed or are pursuing laws that limit the types of weapons citizens can own. Is that not infringing? The IRS has been caught targeting people and groups for their political beliefs. The NSA has been caught intimidating journalists. The government, from the very mouth of its elected leaders, is still claiming it doesn't spy on citizens — when one of the very men they paid to do the spying has provided data to the contrary. You live in a facade of freedom. The White House has a Facebook page. Advertisement Three 15,000%+ stock runs in a row When one trailblazing investment collective secured three five-digit stock runs in a row, early investors reaped giant gains of 19,950%, 49,893%, and 67,350%. Now this group has its hands on yet another game-changing technology, meaning it's once again poised to unleash a torrent of "retire now" stock market gains. You can learn all about this trade — and set yourself up for the next five-digit winner — for free. Democracy Facade What does all this mean for retail investors like me and you? I should probably also mention, while I'm on this soapbox, that we have a democracy facade as well... Every two or four years, we're allowed to pull the lever, usually for the same man or woman, but occasionally for someone new who will simply carry the torch of the status quo. The guy in there now was supposed to bring change, right? He continued the appointment of Bernanke and Gates. He continued the drone policy. He continued the domestic drug policy. Guantanamo is still open, Habeas Corpus still suspended. The wars are still going and are even deadlier than before he took office. Banks still aren't being prosecuted. Numerous former banking executives and lobbyists have been appointed to administration and diplomatic positions. I could go on... but the fact of the matter — and my point — is that seemingly, the entirety of America has turned into a hollowed shell of its former self. Some of us have snapped out of it. Others are slowly adjusting to the light. Let's call them the 128 million Americans who spend an average of 32 minutes per day consuming nothing but the facades of Facebook. Ready to break the facade? You're in good company. Call it like you see it, Nick Hodge Publisher, Outsider Club

Welcome to mjventertainment.blogspot.com: 15:59 Brexit: Remain strong in Scotland ahead of EU referendum by Jan van der Made A Remain campigners leaflets before Thursday's referendum Reuters/Kevin Coombs The vote to stay in the European Union in Thursday's referendum is likely to be overwhelming in Scotland. If Britain does vote for Brexit, Scottish pro-independence forces are gearing up for a repetition of the 2014 referendum on whether Sotland stays in the UK. "Tell me about what’s happened to Greece,” says Ian Morse, an activist for Vote Leave who trying to convince passersby to vote against the EU. “Greece has been destroyed by the EU. We are tired of EU regulations. We are tired of bureaucrats who are not democratically elected, we are tired of the cost of the whole thing,” he fulminates. Morse is part of what he calls a “substantive” minority in Scotland. Majority sentiment in Edinburgh seems favourable to remaining inside the EU. “So to say that we want control back, that we want democracy back, that we sovereignty back makes no sense,” says Mona Siddiqi, a professor of Islamic Studies with the University of Edinburgh, who doubles as the chairwoman for the advisory committee of Scotland’s’ Remain (in Europe) campaign. “By being part of a club, which offers us benefits, as well as compromises that we make, but then everybody makes such compromises, I think that by staying in we are more advantaged than disadvantaged,” she says. Polls show massive Europhilia The hundreds of opinion polls carried out since the beginning of this year point at massive Scottish support in favour of the EU. “There is no significant political figure in Scotland in any of the political parties or in civil society who is advocating a Brexit vote,” says Andrew Scott, an economist with the University of Edinburgh. And there’s more. The Scottish economy enjoys benefits in agriculture and fisheries and its main source of income, oil and gas, thrives thanks to foreign investment. Many believe a Brexit vote would be a final blow to the Scottish economy, which has been suffering as a result of the global financial crisis and, more recently, the falling oil prices. Aberdeen anxious over oil A Brexit “would come down to first to immediate things like the values of currency, like barriers to trade, and barriers to people,” says Barney Crocket, who is in charge of energy policy on Aberdeen city council. “We have a very internationalised workforce here, that relies on rapid movement, we have a sizeable French population in the city, we have a French lycée in the city, we looked to build these relationships and certainly not to loose them,” he says. But there is no fallback plan. “I think we have been very reluctant to think about Plan B,” says Crocket. “Because really the damages are so great, we didn’t like it. But we would be keen to keep as many structures working as possible." Brexit would boost Scottish nationalists In the scenario that a majority in the UK votes to leave the European Union, politicians of the Scottish National Party are thinking of pushing for a new referendum on Scottish independence. Scottish independence was rejected by a 55-45 percent in a 2014 vote. A UK-wide Brexit vote will give new arguments to the Scottish independence movement but both Leave and Remain supporers have their doubts about another Scottish independence referendum. “If Britain leaves the EU, Scotland will stay in the union with England,” says Ian Morse, of the Leave campaign “Because the Scottish National Party does not have enough money to go for independence. And the people of Scotland realise that. The oil money is not sufficient.” Instead, he says that the SNP should campaign to leave the EU. “They hope to accentuate the differences between Scotland and England. They should really be campaigning to leave the EU, because in that way they will get a lot more powers delegated to them from the European parliament,” he argues. But this too, may complicate matters. “If Brexit happens then a number of policies which are presently run from Brussels, agriculture and fishery, would be repatriated back to the UK,” agrees Andrew Scott of Edinburgh University. “And, under the terms of the Scotland act, both agriculture and fishing would default to the Scottish parliament.” But, he says, this will create a tension with London. “London may want to retain control of fishing policy. So I can see a Brexit vote not only triggering a kind of political moment for the SNP to look to a second referendum but I think it would trigger a wider constitutional moment where there would be a struggle for powers repatriated after Brexit, between Holyrood [the seat of the Scottish parliament in] and Westminster."

Welcome to mjventertainment.blogspot.com: Buhari angry with CBN over new policy 3 hours ago SHARE THIS NEWS! Facebook Twitter WhatsApp Email – President Muhammadu Buhari believes the newly introduced flexible exchange policy by the CBN is of no benefit to the economy – Buhari describes the policy as a ruthless devaluation of the Naira – Buhari places the responsibility of creating jobs on the door steps of the business community President Muhammadu Buhari has said the current flexibility policy recently introduced by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is of no benefit to the economy, Vanguard reports. The CBN had introduced the flexible policy to enable market variables determine the value of the naira. The policy came as an economic and market strategy to systematically devalue the Naira, following its free fall recently. But according to Buhari, the new policy was yet to benefit the country. READ ALSO: CBN plans new policy to weaken Naira President Muhammadu Buhari has said the current flexibility policy recently introduced by the CBN is of no benefit to the economy. Speaking after breaking his Ramadam fast with members of the Nigerian business community at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, last night, the President said: “I don’t like the returns I get from the CBN concerning the devaluation of the Naira. How much benefit have we derived from naira devaluation in the past? In August 1985, the Naira was N1.3 to a dollar but now you need N300 or N350 to a dollar. What do we derive from that? How much benefit can we derive from this ruthless devaluation of the Naira. “I’m not an economist neither a businessman, I fail to appreciate what the economic explanation is. What has happened to us now is that we have maneuvered ourselves into mono-economy which led to the collapse we are seeing now.” READ ALSO: President Buhari speaks on the state of nation However, President Buhari placed the responsibility of creating jobs on the door steps of the business community. He noted that as part of plans to diversify the economy, 13 states have been identified that can produce rice that will feed the nation in 18 months. He agreed with the business community that Nigeria will be in trouble, describing as disappointing that Nigeria imported things like tomatoes, rice, wheat among others that can be produced in the country. Buhari had, in February in Egypt, said he was not in support of devaluation of the naira. He said Nigeria, which is not an exporting nation, would be worst hit if the naira was devalued. Also, in March, in Kenya, while addressing Nigerians in that country, Buhari said he won’t kill the naira. However, on June 2, President Muhammadu Buhari supported plans by the CBN to move to a flexible exchange rate market. The president reportedly gave his approval for the CBN to begin implementation of the flexible exchange rate system.

Welcome to mjventertainment.blogspot.com: 27-06-2016 to 11:44 Paris, London mayors vow to stick together post-Brexit by RFI Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo and London Mayor Sadiq Kahn at a meeting in London recently The mayors of Paris and London vowed Monday to work closer together to "shape the century ahead" despite Britain's choice to leave the European Union. Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo and London Mayor Sadiq Kahn published a joint statement in Le Parisien and The Financial Times papers, which highlighted the important role of cities in leading innovation. "London and Paris. There is so much that unites our two great cities. Shared history, shared culture, shared challenges and the shared experience of being one of just a handful of truly global cities," they wrote. London voted to remain in the EU, while poorer regions surrounding the capital voted to leave. "Despite the outcome of the EU referendum, our two cities must now work more closely together than ever before in order to deliver on our shared agendas," read the statement. "If the 19th century was defined by empires and the 20th century by nation-states, the 21st century belongs to cities." Hidalgo and Kahn said that when it came to economic growth, tackling air pollution and moving to clean energy, it was cities that were leading the charge. They said that Paris and London could together act as a "powerful counterweight to the lethargy of nation states and to the influence of industrial lobbies." "In cities we celebrate our diversity and see our differences as a great source of strength. Our cities are places where everyone, whatever their background, can feel at home."

Welcome to mjventertainment.blogspot.com: ‘No going back on Brexit' - Hollande by RFI Matteo Renzi, Angela Merkel and François Hollande at an arishow in 2014 AFP PHOTO / STEFAN ROUSSEAU/POOL French President François Hollande will hold talks with EU President Donald Tusk in Paris Monday, before heading to Berlin for a meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi. This, after Britain’s decision to become the first member state to leave the 28-member European Union has plunged the bloc into uncharted waters, sparking widespread concern and triggering losses of over $2 trillion on global stock markets. French politicians from across the political spectrum have adopted a tough line since the British referendum, saying a quick divorce is necessary. Some are describing Brexit as an opportunity for France to reassert its leadership in the EU. "There can be no cat and mouse game," French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault said over the weekend. Hollande declared there was no going back on "Brexit", adding: "What was once unthinkable has become irreversible." The French president said Paris and Berlin must use their strong friendship to seize the initiative, warning that "separated, we run the risk of divisions, dissension and quarrels". Meanwhile, European leaders continue diplomatic activity this week to plan the way forward, with some pushing for a quick divorce amid fears Britain’s vote to leave will create a domino effect in eurosceptic member states. Leaders will then begin a crunch two-day summit in Brussels on Tuesday, when British Prime Minister David Cameron is expected to face huge pressure to immediately trigger the two-year process to exit the EU. ‘Full agreement’ On Sunday, a source close to the French presidency said Hollande and Merkel were in “full agreement on how to handle the situation” created by Britain’s vote to quit the EU. Both heads of state “want the greatest clarity to avoid any uncertainty” and “stressed the need for European initiatives and the need to act quickly on concrete priorities.”   But despite the talk of unity and “full agreement”, divisions have emerged across the Rhine over how to treat Britain in the immediate aftermath of the vote. At a meeting of Merkel's conservatives on Sunday, she and her aides made clear that they were ready to give Britain the time it needs to sort through its political mess before starting talks on the terms of a Brexit. Some officials in Berlin may even be hoping that the referendum could be reversed. Either way, their priority is to prevent an acrimonious rupture with London. "Of course the EU has the means to pressure Britain but we shouldn't focus on that," one senior German official told Reuters. "They need the time to realise what they've done. There is no need for threats or pressure at the moment." Article 50 Some EU diplomats have warned that Britain "may never" trigger the formal divorce process -- Article 50 of the 2007 Lisbon Treaty, which will set the clock ticking on a two-year period for Britain to negotiate its divorce. Britain's Cameron has said he will step down by October, allowing his successor to conduct the talks and, presumably, trigger Article 50. His Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond, who campaigned for Brexit, indicated the UK would resist pressure for a swift start to negotiations, insisting that "nothing is going to happen at the moment".

Welcome to mjventertainment.blogspot.com: Friend -- What a difference we can make in a few years. When President Obama laid out his climate action plan three years ago today, pundits and reporters were asking if he was really going to be able to get it done. No one cared enough to take it seriously, they said. And climate deniers were running amok, refusing to accept basic scientific principles, let alone take congressional action to address climate change. But despite the doubters and the deniers, we've seen incredible progress. Clean renewable energy sources like wind and solar are booming, President Obama's Clean Power Plan will dramatically cut carbon pollution from our power plants, and the U.S. led nearly every country in the world to join the Paris Climate Agreement -- the first truly global agreement to fight climate change. These achievements were possible because people like you wouldn't leave this issue on the back burner. Supporters have stepped up to keep this work going, and we can't afford to slow down now in pushing for meaningful action. Help make sure the progress we've already made on climate change continues -- chip in to support OFA today. Issues like climate change are bigger than the day-to-day squabbles we usually see in Washington. They require us to stand taller, look farther, and consider what kind of legacy we want to leave for our children. Climate change is on our doorstep. We've experienced record temperatures every month for most of the last year. The systems our society and economy rely on are under pressure, from droughts and floods affecting agriculture, to heat waves and air pollution affecting public health. Sea level rise is increasing the risks of catastrophic storms like Hurricanes Sandy and Katrina. This isn't a hopeless fight. I believe that we can push the deniers to the fringes and continue to shift our economy to clean sources of energy that will power our country and the world for centuries to come -- as long as we work together to keep up the progress. Stand up for continued action, and pitch in now: https://my.barackobama.com/Continued-Climate-Progress

Welcome to mjventertainment.blogspot.com: Partisan Lyon expected to roar France to victory over Ireland by Paul Myers Martin O'Neill is hoping to lead Ireland into their first European championship quarter-final. Reuters/Uefa In London there’s an allowance paid to certain workers such as police and teachers designed to help them remain in the capital due to the higher cost of living. ‘London weighting’ has been around since 1920. For France’s match against Ireland on Sunday in ‘Lyon weighting’ seems to be in operation. The 59,000 seat stadium in the city will have just under 5,000 seats designated for Ireland fans as their team tries to reach the last eight at the Euros for the first time. "It's totally disproportionate for a stadium of this size," said Ireland manager Martin O'Neill. "For us, or any team that was going to be playing in the round of 16 here, to be allocated less that 5,000 tickets is, I think, pretty unfair, honestly." Vocal backing in a partisan cauldron won’t be the only aide to France’s progress. Didier Deschamps’ side advanced to the last 16 last Sunday while Ireland only secured qualification on Wednesday night with a dramatic 1-0 victory over Italy in Lille. “You have to take rest into consideration,” said O’Neill. “That was always going to be the case with us starting off late in the competition so we knew we would face this problem if we did qualify. “We have to cope with it and get on with it. If the players have recovered and can show the same zeal and energy that they did against Italy, then we will be up for the game.” While Ireland are debutants at this stage of the Euros, France have often been at this stage of the competition. They have won the competition twice and were beaten in the last eight in 2012 by the eventual champions Spain. Deschamps, who captained France to the title at the Euro 2000 championships, said he would not underestimate Ireland. He also discounted Ireland’s thirst for revenge over Thierry Henry’s handball in 2009 which led to France’s winning goal during a play-off for the 2010 World Cup. "It belongs to history," said Deschamps. "We have decided to forget about it," added O'Neill. Hardly surprising. For O’Neill and his side there are latter day injustices to negotiate.

Welcome to mjventertainment.blogspot.com: Catherine Deneuve’s six-decade career rewarded at French festival by Rosslyn Hyams Catherine Deneuve and Gérard Depardieu in François Truffaut's The Last Métro Jean-Pierre Fizet © Jean-Pierre Fizet French film star Catherine Deneuve is poised to receive a major career achievement award. The Lumière Festival singles out one movie-world veteran each year. In previous years, US directors Martin Scorcese, Quentin Tarantino and Clint Eastwood, Britain’s Ken Loach and Spain’s Pedro Almodovar have been honoured. "The 'Queen' Catherine,” says Thierry Frémaux, the Lumière Festival director. “She's more than an actress, she's a personality. The way an artist chooses who they work with says a lot about them. From her role with Danielle Darrieux, Jacques Demy, with Luis Bunuel, and today she goes along with the young film makers. She also fought a lot for women in the 1970s and 80s. She's a star. Mysterious and approachable at the same time." Deneuve (born Dorleac) has more than 100 films to her credit. Her first film experience, in The Twilight Girls, was at the age of 13 in 1957. Since then she has taken on an exceptional range of roles in, for example, Demy's musicals - The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, 1964, The Young Girls of Rochefort, 1967 -  comedies - Jaco Van Dormael's The Brand New Testament, 2015 -  dramas Bunuel's Belle du Jour, 1967, François Truffaut's The Last Métro, 1980, Lars von Trier's Dancer in the Dark,  2000. She's sought after for both art-house and mainstream films and has received two César awards from the French Cinema Academy. Deneuve will receive her award at the Lumière festival in Lyon on 14 October. Gender rebalancing Another special guest will be Chinese film heroine Gong Li (Raise the Red Lantern, Coming Home). In its History of Women in Cinema section, the festival has also programmed a retrospective of the works of Dorothy Arzner, one of the rare women Hollywood directors of the 1940s and 50s (Dance Girl Dance, 1940, starring Maureen O’Hara and Lucille Ball). The Lyonnais brothers Auguste and Louis Lumière, invented cinema 120 years ago. The film festival named after them and held in their city, specialises in classics and restored film. The nine-day festival scrambles the notion of age and generations on and off screen and is contributes to the cinema world’s very current gender rebalancing act.

French President Francois Hollande said Friday that Britain's vote to leave the EU was a "grave test for Europe" in view of the economic and financial consequences. "The British vote poses a grave test for Europe, which must show solidity and strength in its response to the economic and financial risks," Hollande said. Meanwhile, Donald Tusk, President of the European Council and Martin Schulz, President of the European Parliament said in the joint statement that the exit should be swift. “Together we will address our common challenge to generate growth, increase prosperity and ensure a safe and secure environment for our citizens. The institutions will play their full role in this endeavor,” the statement reads. “We now expect the United Kingdom government to give effect to this decision of the British people as soon as possible, however painful that process may be. Any delay would unnecessarily prolong uncertainty.” However, Boris Johnson, who spearheaded the successful campaign for Britain to leave the European Union, said there was no need to rush the process of pulling out of the bloc. "There is now no need for haste," Johnson told a London press conference in his first public comments since the results were announced. He said the EU had been "a noble idea for its time" but was "no longer right for this country,” he said. Elsewhere, Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said that a second independence vote for Scotland was "on the table" after Britain voted to leave the European Union. "The option of a second referendum must be on the table and it is on the table," she said, adding that legislation for another vote following the one held in 2014 would be prepared when the Scottish Parliament approved it.

REUTERS/Jacky Naegelen Tens of thousands of people marched in Paris to protest against the labour reforms proposed by the government. Unlike some of the previous protests, no clashes were reported this time in the French capital. However, there were some disturbances reported during a march in the western city of Rennes. The trade unions estimated that around 60,000 people participated in the march in Paris that started at 2:15 pm at the historic Bastille square. The police prefecture placed the number to be around 20,000. The route in the French capital had been curtailed to just 1.6 km in order to prevent a repeat of violence that had marred last Tuesday’s protest. More than 2000 policemen were deployed for the march. Police said they took at least 85 people into detention even before the march commenced for possession of objects that could be used as projectiles. The trade unions led by CGT have been protesting against the government over the bill to reform labour laws which, critics say, would dismantle job guarantees for workers. Meanwhile, French president Francois Hollande on Thursday said that his government would “go all the way” to enact the controversial labour reforms.

According to the report, “On June 12, 2014, barely 10 days to the Ekiti State governorship election, Obanikoro and a man, who claimed to be his Aide-de-Camp by the name of A. O. Adewale, chartered a private jet belonging to OAS Helicopters. “About N724,500,000 was conveyed on the plane with tail number N638MA. The plane was an HS125 jet, operated by Okin Travellers, a subsidiary of Elizade. The plane landed at Akure at 9.38am and then went back to Lagos to get an extra N494,900,000 and landed at Akure at 5.57pm. “Obanikoro handed the money over to one Abiodun Agbele, otherwise known as Abey, an associate of Fayose. Officials of Zenith Bank arrived at the tarmac in a bullion van to convey all the cash to the bank’s vault, located at 13 Alagbaka Estate, Akure.” READ ALSO: Nigerians criticise EFCC over freezing Fayose’s account EFCC detective also revealed how Abey  shared the money. “Abbey directed the bank to pay N137m into the account of Ayodele Fayose with number 1003126654 and Bank Verification Number 22338867502. The bank teller dated June 26, 2014, was filled by Abbey with teller number 0556814. “Abbey directed the bank to transfer N118,760,000 to the same account and paid in N50m cash into Fayose’s account. “On April 7, 2015, several months later, Fayose personally moved N300m to his fixed deposit account at Zenith Bank with number 9013074033 with the same BVN. The account is domiciled at 15 Olusola Abiona Street, Estate, Alapere, Ketu, Lagos.” Meanwhile, a top official of the EFCC said: “Fayose benefited from the ONSA slush funds when he was yet to be a governor. JNDLF alleged that the “coup plotters” wanted to use the continued destruction of oil facilities as the real reason to overthrow the federal government. President Muhammadu Buhari and chief of army staff, Lt Gen Tukur Buratai The electronic statement released, was signed by those who identified themselves as ‘General’ Torunanaowei Latei (Creek Network Coordinator); ‘General’ Agbakakuro Owei-Tauro (Pipeline Bleeding Expert); ‘General’ Akotebe Darikoro (Commander, General Duties) and ‘General’ Pulokiri Ebikade (Intelligence Bureau). The militant group stated: “We are constraint to let the cat out of the bag today that PresidentMohammadu Buhari should be wary about the security of this country as some military men are making move to remove him from power by instigating civil unrest in the country. Welcome to mjventertainment.blogspot.com: Listen FRANCE LABOUR DEMONSTRATION TRADE UNION FRENCH POLITICS Issued on 22-06-2016 • Modified 22-06-2016 to 16:18 French minister lifts labour reform demo ban after meeting unions by RFI CGTleader Philippe Martinez and Force Ouvrière's Jean-Claude Mailly at a press conference on Wednesday Reuters/Baz Ratner French unions say their demonstration planned for Thursday will go ahead, following a last-minute agreement with Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve on a changed route. Earlier Paris police had banned the march because of violence on previous protests against the Socialist government's labour reform plans.  "After tough talks with the interior minister, the union and student organisations obtained the right to demonstrate on a route proposed by the interior ministry," Philippe Martinez of the CGT union told a news conference. The government also gave the go-ahead for a demonstration next Tuesday, on the eve of a Senate vote on the proposed labour reforms, Martinez said, although details have yet to be sorted out. "We told the minister we cauldn't cancel," Jean-Claude Mailly, of the FO union that also called for the protest, said, adding that the march would follow a shorter route of 1.6 kilometres. Cazeneuve said that no violence would be tolerated. On Wednesday morning Paris police announced that they had banned the demonstration, following the unions' refusal to call off the march and just hold a rally. The decision, which came after calls from Prime Minister Manuel Valls called on unions to scrap the protest because of violence on a demonstration on 14 June, caused an outcry on the left. Hard left and far right slam ban Communist senators called for the debate in the French upper house to be suspended because "the democratic conditions no longer exist" and the hard-left Left Party said it would join the unions if they decided to defy the ban. The Senate is to vote on the bill on Thursday. On the right, National Front leader Marine Le Pen called the ban a "serious attack on democracy", although mainstream right-wing former prime minister François Fillon welcomed it. Even the two major unions that accepted the government's amended version of the bill, the CFDT and the CFE-CGC, criticised the move and called for continuing dialogue with the rival unions. First union demo ban for 54 years No union demonstrations have been banned in France since 1962 when the CGT and students' union Unef joined left-wing parties in a demonstration about the war in Algeria. A police charge led to the deaths on nine people in the Charonne metro station during that march. Under the present government, a demonstration against Israel's offensive on Gaza was banned in 2014, marches relating to the Cop21 climate conference were forbidden because of the state of emergency declared after the 13 November Paris attacks, pro- and anti-migrant demonstrations in Calais were banned this year, as were two protests against the labour reform were banned in the western city of Nantes.

Welcome to mjventertainment.blogspot.com: LATEST Presidency is not a joking matter, Buhari reveals 4 hours ago SHARE THIS NEWS! Facebook Twitter WhatsApp Email – President Muhammadu Buhari told some members of his cabinet that governing Nigeria is no joke and the country seriously needs prayers to solve its challenges – He said part of the challenges is that while the economy is going down, the country has not developed agriculture while it is still trying to get investors in the solid mineral sector – He declares that those agitating for Biafra were not born during the civil war because they would have known the calamity the war brought to the country President Muhammadu Buhari may have revealed how hot his seat is as he disclosed on Tuesday evening that leading Nigeria is not a joke. President Muhammadu Buhari He also called for prayers from well-meaning Nigerians saying this is one sure way the country can grow and overcome its current economic challenges. The Cable reports that the president made the disclosure while breaking his fast with some members of his cabinet at the presidential villa, Abuja. Buhari said this just when the federal government has sacked resident doctors in government hospitals a day after they embarked on a nationwide strike. To him, the Ramadan period is an opportunity for leaders to be more conscious of their actions. READ ALSO: FG lied, no ceasefire agreement – Niger Delta Avengers He said: “Leading the people is not a joke. It means accepting responsibilities for good or wrong. “We need a lot of prayers. This month of prayers and service to God, let’s keep on these prayers all the times, believing that God in His infinite mercy will listen to our prayers, give us peace, security and better the economy once more so that we can quickly rebuild and even do more for the  country. “With the nation’s economy going down… We haven’t developed the agriculture, we’re still trying to talk on those who’ll come and develop the solid mineral for us.  “It’s no news that we are the biggest country in Africa, we’re the economy engine of Africa, which are true by the way. But, we must always be patriotic in our dealings with others. “It strengthens our resolve to build our country to make it stronger and to make sure that the incoming generations are sufficiently motivated to be patriotic.” While commending Yakubu Gowon, former head of state, for striving to preserve the unity of the country, the president urged militants and those agitating for Biafra republic to ruminate on the civil war in which over two million lives were lost. READ ALSO: Presidency reacts to Fayose’s comment on Aisha Buhari  “We have to reflect on the historical antecedent to appreciate what is before us now and what we intend to leave for our children and our grandchildren. “The militants in their various homes need to reflect very seriously on what happened between 1967 and 1970. About two millions Nigerians lost their lives. “And at that time, as young military officers, you hardly heard of anything about petroleum or whatever money you got from it. “Look at what General Gowon said: `To keep Nigeria one is a task that must be done’ and every soldier whether he has been to school or not knew what the General meant. But, we were quarreling with our brothers, we were not fighting an enemy and then somebody is saying that once again he wants Biafra. “I think this is because he was not born when there was Biafra.” Want to read news with extra convenience? Welcome to mjventertainment.blogspot.com: Jefferson bribery scandal 3 hours ago SHARE THIS NEWS! Facebook Twitter WhatsApp Email – Governor Ayodele Fayose has spoken out again regarding Aisha Buhari’s role in a bribery scandal – The Ekiti state governor distributed a link to US Justice department showing evidence of funds transfered by Aisha Buhari – Fayose claims that Buhari is as corrupt as those he is witch-hunting Fayose relived the controversy on Monday, June 20,  stressing the role played by Buhari’s wife, in the messy bribery scandal involving Williams Jefferson, a US Congressman. Governor Fayose says President Buhari is a corrupt man. The Ekiti state governor distributed a link to the US Department of Justice’s website holding court documents where Aisha Buhari was alleged to have transferred suspicious funds to a convicted former American congressman, Williams Jefferson. In a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Idowu Adelusi, Fayose said President Buhari was far from being a clean man. “Even the President cannot claim to be an angel,” the governor said, in reaction to the freezing of his Zenith Bank account by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. “The estate he built in Abuja is known to us. His wife was indicted over the Halliburton Scandal (sic). When that American, Jefferson, was being sentenced, the President’s wife was mentioned as having wired $170,000 to Jefferson. Her name was on page 25 of the sentencing of Jefferson. We can serialize the judgment for people to see and read.” The governor’s Special Assistant on New Media, Lere Olayinka, later circulated links to and copies of the court document detailing Mrs Buhari’s mention in the scandal. The documents showed that in some of the exhibits tendered in convicting Mr. Jefferson of bribery, Mrs. Buhari was mentioned as transferring $170,000 to the American politician using a firm as proxy. READ ALSO: Attack on Buhari: Governor Fayose gets stern warning “Government Exhibits 36-87 (6/26/02 $170,000 wire transfer from account in Nigeria in the name of Aisha Buhari to an account in the name of The ANJ Group, LLC, identifying “William Jefferson” as Beneficiary),” the US Government Sentencing Memorandum said on page 22. Aisha Buhari could not be reached for comments. And Presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina, declined comments, saying he would need to check the documents himself before issuing an official statement. Fayose’s comment sparked a recollection of how Mr Jefferson, between 2000 and 2005, used his position as member of the U.S. House of Representatives to offer illegal services to private companies for cash rewards. Premium Times reports that Jefferson and his family, according to US authorities, received about $367,500 through through his firm, ANJ Group, for services rendered to iGate, an American broadband technology provider. An indigenous firm, Netlink Digital Television, had signed a joint venture with iGate to set up digital satellite TV and broadband Internet services in the country. NDTV was owned by Oyewole Fasawe, a PDP chieftain at the time. Mr. Jefferson was contracted to help promote iGate and NDTV partnership in Nigeria. Following a lengthy trial, Mr. Jefferson was convicted in 2009 and sentenced to 13 years in prison. Although Mr. Fasawe was arrested in 2005 by the EFCC, he was never convicted. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar were also said to be a person of interest in the allegations. A final report released by the EFCC on June 22, 2006 about the bribery scandal also contained Mrs. Buhari’s Citizens Bank account statements and how she transferred funds to Mr. Jefferson. A 2007 New York Times’ article detailed how Mrs. Buhari told an acquaintance in Washington that she was a daughter of a former Nigerian head of state and a friend of Mr. Jefferson. “As the pair struck up a conversation and subsequently became friends, Mr. Assiba, then a security guard, said she told him that her father was the former military ruler of Nigeria, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, and that her American friends included politicians like Mr. Jefferson of Louisiana.” Meanwhile, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission(EFCC) has frozen the personal account of Governor Ayodele Fayose. A source was also said to have disclosed that the governor’s account in Zenith Bank in Ekiti as well as those of some of his associates were also frozen by the anti-graft agency. After visiting the bank at Onigari, GRA area of the state capital, Fayose described the action as illegal and while citing section 308 of the 1999 constitution, the governor stated that the federal government should fight corruption within the ambit of the law, since he enjoys immunity as a sitting governor. He said: “I got mind of the fact that the EFCC had placed restriction order on my personal account and that of my associates. I came here today and I have been able to see it. This action shows that this government has no respect for the constitution because I enjoy immunity under Section 308. “I support government fighting corruption, but it has to be within the ‎ambit of the law. You can investigate me, it is their right, but they have to wait till 2018, because I will be done by then. They should not be in a hurry because I will personally come to them for investigation.” In reaction to Fayose’s comments, the EFCC has said that immunity does not stop the commission from investigating suspicious account belonging to any governor. The anti-graft agency was reacting to the claim that Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti state cannot be investigated because of immunity currently being enjoyed by him. Speaking to Vanguard, Wilson Uwujaren, the spokesman for the EFCC, said the immunity being enjoyed by any governor does not prevent the commission from investigating suspicious movements of money into their accounts. Fayose has lamented the undue interference in the internal affairs of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) by the government and security agents. Speaking shortly after a meeting held by the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) with governors and the Makarfi-led caretaker committee in Abuja on Thursday, June 16, Fayose alleged that there was a strategic effort to destroy the PDP in Nigeria. The governor however expressed confidence that the leadership crises currently rocking the party will soon be over. SHA

Welcome to mjventertainment.bloogspot.com: Listen FRANCE SOCIALIST PARTY FRANÇOIS HOLLANDE Issued on 19-06-2016 • Modified 19-06-2016 to 12:19 Hollande’s Socialist Party to hold primary in January by RFI President Francois Hollande: Socialist Party to hold primary The national executive of the Socialist Party has announced that it will hold a ‘primary’ next January to decide on who will stand in the presidential elections next year. According to reports today in the weekly Journal du Dimanche, the ‘primary’ will take place next January and will have two rounds on January 22 and January 29. The primary is open to any candidate from the Belle Alliance populaire, a grouping of the Socialist Party, the Radical Left Party (Parti Radical de Gauche) and the Ecologists. The secretary of the Socialist Party Jean-Christophe Cambadélis had already said on Friday that he would be opening the vote to “all citizens”, but later qualified that by indicating that only members of the Belle Alliance could stand. According to Cambadélis, the sitting president, Francois Hollande, supports the decision to hold a primary and told Cambadélis that if was not capable of winning the support of the Socialist Party, how could he possibly expect to get the support of the French people. Nominations for the primary will be accepted between December 1 and December 15. Earlier this month, three French Socialists took their own party to court to force it to organise a primary election for next year's presidential poll. The three activists - Yassir Hammoud, Barnabé Louche and Salem Aounit - filed a case on 12 May, basing it on party rules that say that the presidential candidate must be chosen by a primary "open to all citizens who adhere to the values of the Republic" to be held "at least one year before the presidential election". The first round of France's next presidential election is to be held 23 April 2017 and, although the Socialists' national executive voted for a primary of all the left and ecologists on 9 April, it has not yet been held and no date has been announced for it.

Welcome to mjventertainment.blogspot.com: terview the French Sunday newspaper, Journal du Dimanche, Valls said that the security situation in France is so uncertain at the moment that the unions should call protests off in the best interest of the country. “Taking into consideration the violence that has already taken place, the terrible assassination of the two police officers [last week], and the ongoing Euro 2016, the organizers should decide themselves to cancel the protests. It makes sense,” he said in the interview. He added that the CGT needs to pull itself out of the stalemate it’s in at the moment. “Protected in our system [of government] is the right to protest. It is also the responsibly of the government to ensure security…however if the organizers of the protests don’t want to carry out their responsibilities, and if the government believes that the protests are creating danger for the forces of law and order and public property, then the government will carry out its responsibility,” he said. He also indicated that there will be talks between the protest organizers and the police in the coming days to see what can be done. Ban demonstrations? Earlier this week, French President Francois Hollande threatened to ban demonstrations, the day after violent protests in Paris over labour reforms that the government vowed to push through regardless. "At a time when France is hosting the Euro (football tournament), when it is faced with terrorism, demonstrations can no longer be authorised if property and people and public property cannot be safeguarded," Hollande's spokesman Stephane Le Foll told a cabinet meeting last Wednesday. Earlier, a defiant Prime Minister Manuel Valls vowed to stand firm on the reforms despite the mass protests against them. "The government will not change a text which is already the outcome of a compromise sealed several months ago with reform-minded unions," Manuel Valls told France Inter radio. Hollande's Socialist government is trying to push through a set of reforms to the labour market in a bid to rein in down France's stubbornly high unemployment rate. But critics see the reforms as skewed towards business interests, and strikes and clashes have flared in recent months. On Tuesday, several hundred masked protesters hurled projectiles at police, who made dozens of arrests. Forty people were hurt in the clashes, which came with France in the international spotlight as host of the Euro 2016 football championships. Police said 29 members of the security forces were among those injured in Paris, while three cars were burned on the city streets in the last demonstration. Valls blasted the troublemakers, who he said wanted to "kill" the police officers patrolling the demonstration and accused the hardline CGT union, which organised the marches, of an "ambiguous attitude" towards those attacking the authorities. Two further protest days are set for later this month.

Welcome to mjventertainment.blogspot.comm: 17-06-2016 to 17:19 UN report condemns on-going Yazidis genocide by Clea Broadhurst A girl from the minority Yazidi sect, fleeing the violence in the Iraqi town of Sinjar, rests at the Iraqi-Syrian border crossing in Fishkhabour, Dohuk province August 13, 2014. Reuters/Youssef Boudlal The United Nations have acknowledged, in a report called "They came to destroy", that fighters from the Islamic State armed group are committing genocide against Yazidis in Syria and Iraq. In 2014, IS jihadists massacred Yazidis in Sinjar. Tens of thousands were forced to flee. Thousands of girls and women were taken captive to be used as sex slaves. UN report condemns on-going genocide against Yazidis 17/06/2016 - by Clea Broadhurst Listen Despite only being an estimated 700,000 Yazidis in the world, they have, at different times over centuries, been victims of oppression because of their religion. They are neither Muslims, nor Arabs and their faith is unique. That is the main reason why IS despise and target them. "The islamic State armed group have made up an excuse to target them, and make their women and children sex slaves, and that is that they are 'koufar', meaning that they are non-believers or infidels," Nuri Kino, the founder of A Demand For Action, a global initiative which seeks protection for ethnoreligious minorities in the Middle East, told RFI. "They also say they are devil worshippers and that is just an excuse to kill people, to abduct, to destroy and to try to eradicate a whole population." In theory, the specific mention of genocide in this UN report is a major step forward since not so many "massacres" are recognised as such. The UN definition requires certain criteria. "A genocide is an anti-group crime, it's an international crime, with the specific intent to destroy a targeted group, so that's the threshold of proof, and we've heard direct testimonies from the victims, especially the women," Vivit Muntarbhorn, one of the UN commission members in charge of the inquiry, told RFI. "In our past reports, we had already found other violations, such as crimes against humanity, war crimes, but the difference this time is that genocide is the crime of crimes, and it should really trigger a more assertive response, particularly from the Security council, bearing in mind that both Syria and Iraq are parties to the genocide convention which calls upon them to both prevent and punish genocide." The Yazidis themselves have welcomed the report. "It means a lot to us, and we are very grateful, it was long overdue," Hémin Anthony Chamon, the president of the organisation called "Yazidis of France, told RFI. "We have worked really hard for Western countries to recognise what was and is still happening against Yazidis. Already in February, the EU Commission and the United States had acknowledged our plight, and said that this was a genocide. Now, the United Nations say it's an on-going genocide... "It is a leap forward. However the Yazidis need to remain on their guard, because it has yet to be approved by the UN general assemby and security council." It it is difficult to say if this will really lead to the prosecution of jihadists on charges of genocide. Some would argue that this is could change a lot of things, while others are skeptical at this stage. "Even though it's going to open up some form of a breakthrough, and I think that people will use this, and use it as a platform to try to open up legal avenues, and even political avenues... but because the UN is so politicised, and the issue is so sensitive in that it's overlapping to many different interests, that it might actually fall short," Catherine Shakdam, a political analyst on the Middle East, told RFI. "Even though something has been given today, I'm not sure the UN will actually follow through, or that politicians will actually follow through, and help change anything. "It's a form of political postering where they are giving something to the public so that they can't be blamed and can't say that they haven't done anything at all, so they're giving a little nugget to the public to say 'well this is what we're saying, this is where we stand'... but I don't really think that it's going to be the breakthrough that people expect, and that the people deserve." The use of the word genocide is a breakthrough. However, a previous attempt to ask the UN security council to refer Syrian war crimes to the international criminal court failed due to objections from Russia and China. The four independent commissioners claimed at least 3,200 Yazidis women and children were still being held by the militants.

Welcome to mjventertainment.blogspot.com:...... Afp Tweeter British MP murder suspect 'a loner' with extremist views By AFP Issued on 17-06-2016 Modified 17-06-2016 to 12:46 media Flowers and candles are placed next to a picture of murdered Labour MP Jo Cox at a vigil in Parliament Square in London on June 16, 2016 AFP The man arrested over the murder of British MP Jo Cox was described by neighbours as a friendly loner who helped them with their gardening, but allegedly had ties to white supremacists and battled mental illness. Police confirmed a 52-year-old was in custody over Thursday's attack in the Yorkshire village of Birstall. He was named by British media as Thomas Mair, who had lived in social housing nearby for the past 40 years. "He is just a quiet bloke who keeps himself to himself," neighbour Kathleen Cooke, 62, was quoted as saying in several newspapers. Another neighbour, David Pickles, 62, was quoted as saying he was "a bit of a loner, but I could not say he was unfriendly", adding that he was "a man of few words". The description seems at odds with the frenzied nature of the attack on Cox, who eyewitnesses said was shot three times and then stabbed as she lay bleeding on the pavement. Mair's brother Scott, 50, told The Sun tabloid that he was "struggling to believe what has happened". "My brother is not a violent man and is not that political. We don't even know who he votes for. I am visibly shaken at this news," he said. He confirmed that his brother had mental health problems, and the suspect himself spoke about these in an interview with a local newspaper in 2010. But evidence has also emerged of Mair's links to white nationalist movements in the United States and South Africa. The Southern Poverty Law Centre, a US civil rights group, said it had found records suggesting Mair was "a dedicated supporter of the National Alliance (NA), the once premier neo-Nazi organization in the United States, for decades". It said that he had spent more than $620 (550 euros) on reading material from the National Alliance, a group which called for the creation of an all-white homeland and eradication of Jewish people. The Daily Telegraph newspaper also reported that Mair was a subscriber to S. A. Patriot, a South African magazine published by the pro-apartheid group the White Rhino Club. A 2006 blog posting attributed to the group, which describes the magazine's editorial stance as being against multiculturalism, named him as one of its earliest subscribers. - 'Socially isolated' - Mair's half-brother Duane St Louis, 41, expressed his disbelief at suggestions of his far-right leanings. "He's never expressed any views about Britain, or politics or racist tendencies. I'm mixed race and I'm his half-brother, we got on well," he was widely quoted as saying. In 2010, Mair spoke to the local Huddersfield Examiner newspaper about his mental health issues. The report said he volunteered at Oakwell Hall country park, a stately home and gardens nearby, after being a patient at a day centre for adults with mental illness. "I can honestly say it (the work) has done me more good than all the psychotherapy and medication in the world," Mair was reported as saying. "Many people who suffer from mental illness are socially isolated and disconnected from society, feelings of worthlessness are also common, mainly caused by long-term unemployment." Neighbours said that Mair had never had a full-time job, and lived in the council house that he had once shared with his grandmother, who died about 20 years ago. "He's lived there longer than me and I've lived here since 1975. I still can't believe it. He's the last guy I would have thought of," Pickles was quoted as saying by the Press Association news agency. Mair's brother Scott expressed his condolences to Cox's family, while Mair's mother Mary, 69, was also struggling to make sense of what happened. "I don't understand it, I just don't understand it," she was quoted in the Daily Mail as saying.

Welcome to mjventertainment.blogspot.com:.... Afp Tweeter Uruguayans defend national drink after cancer warning By AFP Issued on 17-06-2016 Modified 17-06-2016 to 12:26 media Calabash gourds used to drink the traditional herbal infusion mate, on sale in downtown Montevideo AFP/File It was potentially devastating news for Uruguayans: a warning that their national drink, mate, could cause cancer if consumed hot. But the plucky South American country, already grumpy after being knocked out of the Copa America football tournament, found a silver lining as they faced an affront to their cultural identity. News came from the World Health Organization on Wednesday that drinking very hot liquids poses a cancer risk. That was hard to swallow for a country where in every park and square folk sit slurping mate, an herbal infusion brewed with hot water. "Everything is better with mate," said student Valentina Nunez, 24, sitting with her gourd and a flask of hot water on a university campus in Montevideo. "It's like a companion," said her friend, Jessica Aliz. But the WHO report also brought salvation for lovers of the ground green leaves, whose champions include Argentine-born Pope Francis and Uruguayan football icon Luis Suarez. Along with the hot-drink warning, the WHO removed mate from a blacklist of drinks whose contents were thought to cause cancer. The WHO in 1991 said coffee and mate -- pronounced something like "mattay" -- were thought to have carcinogenic qualities. Now it says it is the heat, not the contents, that poses the tumor risk. In the case of mate, "its components actually lessen the damage from the temperature," stopping cells from mutating into tumors, said Nelson Bracesco, a biologist researching mate at Uruguay's state medicine faculty. "That has been proved in a test tube. It remains to be tested on humans or animals," he said. "It would help to explain why in Uruguay imports of mate leaves have increased strongly and the type of esophageal cancer in question has been decreasing in recent years." - Drink of champions - With three million inhabitants, Uruguay is tiny compared to its mate-rich neighbors Argentina and Brazil. But in mate-drinking terms, it is a giant. Argentina and Brazil are the region's biggest mate producers, but Uruguay consumes more per head than any of these countries, according to industry estimates. Walking in the street, sitting in the park or standing on the bus, Uruguayans can be seen everywhere cradling their mate gourd with a thermos under their arm. The gourd, a hollowed-out pumpkin, is filled nearly to the brim with mate leaves. The water is added in small doses, sometimes over a period of hours. The infusion is consumed by sucking on a metal straw called a bombilla. "It's not like a quick coffee," said Aliz. "It is always there. It lasts longer, you top it off. To drink mate, you have to take time out." Bracesco says his research shows that mate boosts the drinker's concentration and physical well being. "It is part of our culture," said Jorge Vera, 72, who sells mate gourds and bombillas in central Montevideo. "It is expanding outside our region -- even more so now that the pope is an Argentine who drinks mate." Francis has been photographed in his white papal robes with a gourd in hand. So has Suarez, the striker with Spanish football champions Barcelona, arguably the best-known Uruguayan abroad right now. "The first thing I do in the morning is make mate," says Rossimary Baron, 33, a Brazilian living in Montevideo. She moved to the Uruguayan capital four years ago from Rio Grande do Sul, a Brazilian state where mate is drunk from giant gourds. She says the drink makes her feel "at home."

Welcome to mjventertainment.blogspot.com:.... Africa Tweeter Press reviewAfrica African press review 16 June 2016 By William Niba Issued on 16-06-2016 Modified 16-06-2016 to 12:27 media DR South Africans mark 40 years of the Soweto uprising, but the racial tensions which fanned the youth revolts of 1976 are still fan youth anger. Meanwhile, the judge in Pristorius murder trial sets date for final verdict. We start in South Africa where the press marks 40 years of the Soweto Uprising, with a grim reminder that the racial tension that reared its ugly head during the protests are still the driving force behind simmering youth anger. The Citizen The paper recalls that on that fateful day, students from three schools in the black township outside Johannesburg "took to the streets in what was intended to be a peaceful march against the enforced use of the Afrikaans language as a medium of instruction". The number of children shot dead by police was reported at 176 with other estimates citing figures of up to 700, while the number of wounded was reportedly around one thousand people. "It’s still aluta continua", says the Citizen. The paper points to a clamour by young activists today for the radical restructuring of society. This is "evident in the #FeesMustFall and #RhodesMustFall" movements as well as in the hundreds of service-delivery protests spearheaded by young, often unemployed, people which have broken out across the country. Pretoria News The newspaper speaks to a veteran of the Soweto Uprising . Barney Mokgatle, one of the original student leaders who organised the June 16 march and who says the "youth of his time were fearless, burnt trains and travelled in the thick of night to plot the downfall of the apartheid master". As he put it they were "eager groups of individuals whose eyes had been focused on the dream of freedom, but they never crossed the line to destroy schools and clinics". Meanwhile, the disgraced athelete Oscar Pistotius remains a major front-page story for the papers as his retrial for murdering his model girl friend continued in Pretoria. Mail and Guardian The publication says the "convicted murderer" will finally hear his sentence for shooting Reeva Steenkamp in February 2013 when he appears in court on July 6. According to Mail and Guardian, Judge Thokozile Masipa who is presiding over the high court in Pretoria annouinced her decision on Wednesday. The Johannesburg paper says the State prosecutor told the court earlier that a lengthy jail term was appropriate for the iconic athlete. Under South African law, Pistorius faces a minimum 15 year sentence if found guilty of murder. Times Live The newspaper reports that the North Gauteng High Court on Wednesday "granted an order lifting the ban of six photographs of Pistorius' girl friend" Reeva Steenkamp which were taken after her murder. According to Times Live, Reeva’s father‚ Barry Steenkamp‚ had asked during his testimony on Tuesday, that the "media show the world the wounds inflicted Pistorius inflicted on his daughter". Times recalls that when the case was heard in 2013‚ the "court decided‚ at the request of the prosecution‚ to ban the images". The Star The publication highlights a deposition made during the trial on Wednesday by Reeva Steenkamp's cousin Kim Martin when she was called up as the prosecution's final witness. The paper says that she told the high court in Pretoria that Steenkamp "was not in love with the athlete, despite his own claims and those of the couple's friends". Welcome to mjventertainment.blogspot.com:.... Sports Tweeter SportEuro 2016EnglandWalesFrance England leave it late to beat Wales By Paul Myers Issued on 17-06-2016 Modified 17-06-2016 to 01:56 media Daniel Sturridge came off the bench to score England's winner against Wales in Lens. Reuters/Christian Hartmann Back in 1963, Gene Pitney sang about being 24 Hours From Tulsa. On Thursday night at the Stade Bollaert in Lens, the England manager Roy Hodgson appeared to be 45 minutes from disaster. His England side were trailing 1-0 against Wales. They were scurrying around looking for openings but could not breach the Welsh rearguard. At half-time, Hodgson took drastic measures. He removed Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling and brought on Daniel Sturridge and Jamie Vardy. Within 11 minutes Vardy had cancelled out Gareth Bale’s opener for Wales. And in second-half stoppage time, Sturridge had furnished the winner. “When you’ve been in football a long time you find it very hard to remember all the good substitutions you’ve made,” said Hodgson after the 2-1 victory. He contented himself with describing the injection of Vardy and Sturridge as his best double substitution at Euro 2016. "There've only been two games," he quipped. Returning to sober analysis, the 68-year-old added: “Substitutions are going to play a major part in this tournament. The games come thick and fast. Each team has 23 players and in those 23 players there’ll be a lot of players who, when they’re not selected, will feel hard done by and feel that maybe that they should have been selected. I think substitutions will be a feature of the tournament.” England had the majority of the possession against Wales with skipper Wayne Rooney running the show in midfield. He schemed and displayed all his wiles. Deft angled passes, scything cross field balls and a few rumbustuous runs. Kyle Walker was luminous down the right. But there were too many hopeful lofted balls from others, Eric Dier was particularly guilty. It was the scourge of the match. Wales coach Chris Coleman lamented his side’s poor fortune at conceding during stoppage time. But they had dug their own grave. “I think the occasion got to us," said Coleman. " We can play better. We were a little rushed and rather than keeping the ball more, we gave it back to England too many times and they kept possession. Bale was too isolated.” Coupled with Slovakia’s 2-1 win over Russia on Wednesday, Group B is wide open. England lead with four points, Wales are second on three points, the same tally as Slovakia who they edge due to a better head-to-head record. Russia prop up the pool with one point. In the final round of games on Monday Russia play Wales in Toulouse while in St Etienne, England take on Slovakia. A draw will provide a place in the last 16 for England. Wales will guarantee their passage with victory. “We’re going into that last game against Russia and it is down to us," said Coleman. "We’re not asking for any favours, we’ve never done that. We’ve got to go and take care of business ourselves. We’ve got to show a bit of mettle and a bit of steel. We’re down to the last game and we have got a chance and we’ve got to take it.”

Welcome to mjventertainment.blogspot.com:... France Tweeter France Labour Protests Government, unions fail to agree at Labour reform talks By RFI Issued on 17-06-2016 Modified 17-06-2016 to 11:16 media French CGT trade union general secretary Philippe Martinez (C) attends a demonstration against French labour law reforms in Paris, France, May 17, 2016. ©REUTERS/Gonzalo Fuentes The French Labour minister, Myriam El Khomri, and the head of the hardline union Confédération Générale de Travail (CGT) failed to agreed on the proposed Labour law reforms at a meeting Friday morning. For her part, El Khomri said that while the meeting had been “constructive” there were still disagreements, in particular in respect of enterprise agreements and the way they are drawn up. There were also disagreements over redundancies and how they are managed, and the role of the enterprise doctor has in the organization. While El Khomri said that the talks allow for further discussions, the government did not, and will not, roll-back on the key elements of the proposed reforms. France has also been hit by months of strikes that have led to long queues for fuel, rubbish piling up on sidewalks, and train and plane delays. But even before the talks get under way, both sides appeared unyielding. Entrenched positions Martinez has previously demanded that the government suspend debate on the labour law, which is currently before the upper house Senate after the government forced it through the lower house without a vote -- further enraging the union. President Francois Hollande's Socialist government is trying to push through the labour market reforms in a bid to tackle France's 10 percent unemployment rate. More protests However critics see the reforms as skewed towards business interests, and argue that greater flexibility for employers will erode their iron-clad job security. The government has already watered down the reforms, to the satisfaction of reform-minded unions, while more radical leftist unions have dug their heels in. Prime Minister Manuel Valls has vowed to stand firm on the labour reforms. "The government will not change a text which is already the outcome of a compromise sealed several months ago with reform-minded unions," Valls told French radio on Wednesday. He also accused the CGT of having an "ambiguous attitude" to those who carried out violent acts during Tuesday's protest. Paris police chief Michel Cadot said that despite the presence of some 1,500 paramilitary officers and 1,000 police, some 20 shops, 13 signboards, the facades of eight banks, eight bus stops and a dozen public buildings -- including a children's hospital -- were damaged in the protest. Police unions contested Cadot's figures of 28 police wounded, saying they had reports that between 100 and 200 officers had been injured. Hollande has threatened to ban demonstrations, which have come as the country's overstretched security forces are juggling the demands of the Euro football championship and heightened terror fears. The CGT has already planned more protests for June 23 and 28. Welcome to mjventertainment.bllogspot.com: According to Bloomberg news network, foreign direct investment in Nigeria also recently fell to its lowest levels since the 2007 and 2008 global financial crisis. Bloomberg also reported that investors were scared by Buhari's previous policies. This change is policy is also hoped to bring in foreign direct investment. "The government is trying to make institutions, law and code that can guide the economy,” said Femi Saibu, an economics professor at the University of Lagos. “Before, we just saw ‘fire brigade solutions’—the government responding to crisis but not working to improve the system. I think if all these policies are well implemented, the economy will improve in a few months." However, not all the experts agree that this is the right direction to take. Badayi Sani, a professor in the Department of Economics at Bayero University in Kano, Nigeria, is skeptical about this policy. "This can only work for countries that have domestic production capacities,” he said. “Nigeria is interdependent. I’m worried that the purchasing power of Nigerians will be eroded. If the naira loses value, it might negatively affect the government’s ability to provide goods and services and critical infrastructure, as well as its policy of diversifying the economy." Facebook Twitter WhatsApp Email – The 10 days which was stipulated for President Muhammadu Buhari’s medical trip have elapsed – Buhari is expected back in the country on Thursday, June 16 – President Buhari has assured Nigerians that his administration will restore smiles on the face of the people If all goes well as planned President Buhari is expected back in the country on Thursday (today) from London, after having had commenced a 10-day holiday penultimate Monday. President Buhari is to return to Nigeria today, June 16, after his 10-day medical trip to London. The Presidency had, in a statement, indicated that the President would during the visit to the United Kingdom, see an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist for a persistent ear infection. The 10-day holiday ended on Wednesday and the President is expected to return to Abuja today, June 16. A source in the Presidency, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said on Wednesday, June 15, that arrangements had been put in place to receive the President, who is due back in the country on Thursday. “He is expected back on Thursday (today). We are in touch with him. As of today (Wednesday), we have not been told that there is any change in arrangement,” the source said. READ ALSO: Stop making a jest of President Buhari’s sickness – Kukah The Presidency had, on Monday, June 13, released photographs of the visit of the Archbishop of Canterbury, Most Revd, Justin Welby, to Buhari in London. Welby, who presented a souvenir to the President, was in company with Nigeria-born Secretary-General of Anglican Communion Worldwide, Most Revd Idowu Fearon. Buhari had so far embarked on holiday twice this year. The President had earlier embarked on a six-day holiday between February 5 and 10, 2016. Like the case of the second visit, Buhari remained in London throughout the first holiday. He had earlier granted an interview where he said the doctors he had been consulting since the 1970s were based in London. Buhari had, before leaving the country, written to the National Assembly to inform the federal lawmakers of his medical trip. He had indicated in the letter that Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo would perform the duties of the President while he would be away. Meanwhile, the Presidency on Wednesday, June 15, commended the House of Representatives for giving prompt action to two executive bills that scaled through second reading. This was contained in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja by the Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (House of Reps), Alhaji Suleiman Kawu. “We wish to thank the House of Representatives, under the leadership of Speaker Yakubu Dogara, for passing two of our bills today, June 15, 2016,” Kawu said in the statement. “One is a Bill for an Act to Provide for the Domestication and Enforcement in Nigeria of the Avoidance of Double Taxation Agreement between the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Kingdom of Spain. “The other is a Bill for an Act to Provide for the Domestication and Enforcement in Nigeria of the Avoidance of Double Taxation Agreement between the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Republic of South Korea and for Other Related Matters.” According to the statement, the action has shown that the House is solidly behind the executive on its numerous policies aimed at making Nigeria better. “We hope you will also pass our other bills that are currently before the House with the same zeal that you passed these two,” the Presidency stated. President Buhari  has assured Nigerians that his administration will soon put smiles on their faces by rehabilitating the economy and creating more jobs. The President said this in his address delivered at the swearing-in ceremony of the 2016 Batch ‘A’ stream II at the National Youth Service Corps permanent orientation camp, Ede in Osun state on Wednesday. Punch reports that the address was read by the state deputy governor, Mrs Titi Laoye-Tomori. He said the collapse of industries had worsened the unemployment rate because millions of unemployed youths were now struggling  to get  very limited government jobs. Buhari, who lamented the poor state of the economy inherited by his administration, said he was bent on recovering the nation’s stolen wealth and used them to rebuild the economy. He said: “The collapse of industries and the eventual overbearing pressure to grab public jobs has put the nation in a sorry economic state of unemployment. Thousands of graduates from the higher institutions of learning get frustrated daily, as they search for non-existing jobs. “That is why this administration is anxious to recover illicit wealth to channel  them into enduring economic rehabilitation. Very soon, the gloomy situation would be reversed to put smiles on the faces of young people.” The President advised the youths to shun kidnapping, drug peddling and other criminal activities which could jeopardise their future. The Coordinator of the NYSC in Osun state, Mrs Regina Iluebbey, said the scheme had adjusted its cooking arrangements to cater for Muslim corpers, during the Ramadan. She said the scheme would start preparing  saur and Iftar  for Muslim  corps members for them to participate in the Ramadan. She  said: “The camp kitchen would double its efforts in ensuring that the corps members participating in the ongoing Ramadan are  served at saur  (midnight) and Iftar (evening) time throughout their stay in camp.” She added that the NYSC reduced the usual 21 days orientation camp to 17 days due to the large number of students who graduate annually, adding that the cut in days was important in order to cover the salient orientation camp exercises. Iluebbey added that the camp registered 1,416 male corps members and 799 female corpers from the 36  of the federation, including the Federal Capital Territory. Also, the Niger State Governor, Abubakar Bello, on Wednesday said there was no wisdom in scrapping the NYSC  since the primary objective of the programme was still relevant in the nation. Bello, who said that the NYSC was still relevant as a vehicle for national unity, asked the Federal Government to reinvigorate the scheme rather than scrap it. The governor said this at the formal opening ceremony of the 2016 Batch ‘A’ (Stream Two) orientation course and swearing-in ceremony of 2,001 corps members deployed in the state. READ ALSO: What Buhari told Ghana’s president in a telephone call The governor, however, said in the NYSC implementation processes, “we need to be more innovative and we need to reinvigorate the programme by giving the youths the opportunity to learn higher ideals and prepare them for the reality of life after death.” Earlier, the NYSC Niger State Coordinator, Mrs. Bolade Loto, said that a total of 2,001 corps members were registered in the Stream B, adding that they had so far exhibited high level of discipline, commitment and loyalty since they arrived the camp. In Owerri, the Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, advised corps members posted  to the state to ensure active participation in the empowerment programme so as to enable them to stand on their own as entrepreneurs instead of job seekers after the completion  of their service year. Okorocha gave the advice while declaring open, the 2016  Batch “A” (Stream 11) 1,800 corps members posted to the state after the State  Chief Judge, Justice  Paschal Nnadi represented by Justice  Kenneth O.  Ojiako of the state judiciary administered the oath on the corpers. He said: “The NYSC orientation programme provides a veritable  platform for you to be trained mentally and physically and this is done to enable you to face  the rigours and challenges of the service year as well as the post-service year.” Okorocha, who was represented by his deputy, Prince Eze Madumere, restated his determination to make the NYSC Permanent Orientation camp at Eziama Obaire, the best in the country. He also announced the immediate restoration of  regular supply of water, electricity and functional vehicles in the orientation  camp for the comfort of the corps  members and enhancement of the operation of the NYSC officials in the state. The state Coordinator of the NYSC, Mr.  Fasanu Isaac, had earlier commended Okorocha for his sustained support to the scheme as well as his resolution to make the orientation camp second to none in the country.

Welcome to mjventertainment.blogspot.com: ....14-06-2016 to 09:51 Suspect in French police murder had been jailed for terror plot by RFI A video grab of the scene outside the home of the police commander stabbed on Monday night Reuters TV A man suspected of killing a senior French policeman and his partner in a terror-linked attack had been sentenced in 2013 for taking part in a jihadist organisation with links to Pakistan, sources close to the probe said Tuesday. The Islamic State armed group has claimed responsibility for the murder. The suspect has been identified as Larossi Abballa, 25, who had been sentenced to two years six months in jail, plus six months suspended, for "criminal association with the aim of preparing terrorist acts," in a trial with seven other defendants, one of whom was his wife. He was recently investigated for suspected involvement in a Syrian-linked jihadist network. Witnesses in Magnanville, 55 kilometres north-west of Paris, told investigators the suspect may have shouted "Allahu akbar (God is great) as he stabbed the policeman repeatedly outside his home before holing up inside with the woman and the couple's three-year-old son. Loud detonations were heard at the scene as elite Raid police moved in following failed negotiations with the attacker. The police officer's wife, a police administrative officer, was also murdered and the man shot dead in the police assault. The couple's toddler son was "in shock but unharmed", a prosecutor added, saying the boy was receiving medical attention. IS claims responsibility A news agency linked to IS said the attack had been carried out by an "Islamic State fighter", days after posting a similar claim following the massacre at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida. President François Hollande said the attack was "uncontestably terrorist". France's Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve described it as an "appalling terrorist act". Former president Nicolas Sarkozy, now the leader of the right-wing opposition party, the Republicans, said that France's level of alert had to be adapted immediately. The country remains under a state of emergency since the November terror attacks in Paris, which killed 130 people.  To read our coverage of last November's Paris attacks, click here

Welcome to mjventertainment.blogspot.com:rt in the violence, the German police said. In Paris about 50 French youths dressed in black taunted Croation supporters and police moved in when the two sides started throwing missiles and fireworks at each other. Lyon bans alcohol sales Lyon was the first city to take up the French government's permission to forbid the sale of alcohol from the day before a match in areas near stadiums and fan zones, although it limited the ban to takeaway drinks, according to L'Equipe newspaper. A red alert has been declared for Russia's next game, in Lille on Wednesday against Slovakia, and England's Group B game against Wales in nearby Lens on Thursday has also been declared a high risk. The English Football Association urged supporters to "act in a responsible and respectful way", following a threat from Uefa to disqualify both England and France if more violence occurs. UK police blame Russian troublemakers While admitting that a "small minority" of England fans were out to cause trouble, the head of Britain's Euro 2016 policing operation put most of the blame on about 300 of "Russian troublemakers". "They are like nothing we have seen before," Mark Roberts told the Guardian. "They are highly organised and determined to carry out sustained violent attacks at a level of aggression I have not encountered in the past 10 years." British spotters, who will hand over video evidence to French police, saw them putting in gum shields and putting on martial arts gloves and bandanas before attacking England fans on Marseille's Old Port. “We know some were carrying knives because one England fan was stabbed," he said. "They wore a kind of uniform – all in black t-shirts and clothing and most carried bum bags, possibly to conceal weapons." Witnesses said French youths were also involved. The condition of a British man in his 50s who was hospitalised after the fighting had on Sunday stablised but his life was still in danger, sources said. In Nice, where there were clashes between French and Northern Ireland supporters on Saturday, a Northern Irish man died after falling into the sea early on Monday morning but the accident does not seem to be the result of fighting.

Welcome to mjventertainment.blogspot.com:surrounded by crowd of 50,000 Jews near Moscow Choral Synagogue on the first day of Rosh Hashanah in 1948 Wikimedia Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has arrived in Russia to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the re-establishment diplomatic relations between the two countries. But ties between Russia go back centuries and deeply influence daily life in today’s Israel. FdJ Fr ou Intl 08-06-16 Russia Israel 25 08/06/2016 Listen Russian is Israel’s third language, after Hebrew and Arabic. Israeli citizens with Russian roots make up 16 percent of the country’s total population. The very first “aliyah”, wave of Jewish immigrants into what is now Israel came from Odessa in the Russian empire and consisted of people from all over Russian territories escaping the pogroms in Russia to establish settlements in Palestine. “They came from [places like] Odessa, Vilnius and other locations,” says Jonatha Dekel-Chen, a modern history professor with the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. “It set a precedent in traditions that are still very much with us, both politically, ideologically, demographically, ethnically.” “You can really see direct lines in almost every factor of life here in Israel to what those first groups, and also subsequent waves of immigrants brought with them, both in their minds and their bodies and their culture and their ways of speaking it is very much with us still.” Historial Ties When the State of Israel was established in 1948, the USSR under Joseph Stalin was quick to recognize it, and it helped the embryonic state with weapons, sold through Russian satellite Czechoslovakia, in its fight to its Arab neighbors Syria, Egypt and Jordan, that were unhappy with the new kid on the block. But during the ‘50s and 60s’, while Israel was  lookingmore and more to the US for support, the Arab states were courted by Moscow, and Israeli-Russian relations froze. That all changed radically with the fall of the Berlin Wall in ’89 and the disintegration of the Soviet Union two years later. The new Russia under Yeltsin re-established diplomatic ties with Israel, visa restrictions were lifted. Of the 3 million Jews then living in the former USSR, more than a third moved to Israel. “They've changed just about every facet of Israeli society,” says Dekel-Chen. “Economically it was a huge addition to our work force. For the most part they were highly trained, highly qualified people. They changed our attitude towards politics in by creating political constituencies that really didn't exist before their arrival,” he says. Chaning Perceptions The general perception about Russia also changed. “Now we have within our borders a very trans-national, cultural community of Russian speaking Jews and their children, who still have connections, both family connections, cultural connections, sometimes professional connections as well, to the former Soviet Union and that creates a very different dynamic,” says Dekel-Chen. The massive influx of immigrants from Russia may have contributed to a general shift to the political right. The Russian immigrants came from the world’s biggest country to live in one of the smallest. “For many it was difficult to understand why Israel would negotiate over land, or give back strategic territories to what they regard as enemies,” says professor Shmuel Shandler, of Bar Ilan University. “Politically, many of them are more to the right. There are Russian parties, like [current Defense minister Avigdor] Liebermann's party that more identify with the right. But he adds that the “Russians” also contributed a lot to culture. “One good thing of the Soviet education system was that people were highly trained. So there was a massive influx of engineers, but also of musicians, many of them were pianists!” he says. Meanwhile, the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, is trying to strengthen ties with Russia. Not only because there is still a one- million strong Jewish population within Russia, but Russia is also heavily engaged in the Middle East where it supports Israel’s foes, Iran and Syria. But that doesn’t necessarily complicate diplomacy. “One can see that either as yet a complicating factor, as Russia is certainly engaged both with the Syrian regime and with the Iranian regime, both of which are staunch enemies of Israel,” says Dekel-Chen. “On the other hand, one can perhaps see that as an opportunity for Israel, because it is a means by which through Russia, or perhaps even with Russia to, in some way, stabilize the relations, make them more predictable, with those regimes, and all that of course is contingent on an open and honest dialogue between Israel's leaders and Russia's leaders,” he says.

Welcome to mjventertainment.blogspot.com;10-06-2016 to 14:11 Belgium approves extradition of Paris attacks suspect to France by RFI Photograph of Mohamed Abrini released by Belgian police on 24 November, 2015. AFP archives A Belgian court on Thursday approved the extradition to France of Paris attacks suspect Mohamed Abrini. But the timeline of his extradition is uncertain as he is also under investigation for the 22 March Brussels attacks. Federal prosecutors said the court in Brussels, after hearing a French extradition request for Abrini, accepted the European arrest warrant issued against him which would allow for his transfer to France. At the same time, the court remanded Abrini in jail for another month as he is also a suspect in the deadly Brussels airport and metro attacks on 22 March, a statement said. The "man in the hat" Abrini, 31, was arrested in Brussels shortly after those attacks, having been identified as the "man in the hat" seen in CCTV footage with the two bombers who blew themselves up at the airport. "Currently, no additional information will be given regarding the further proceedings," the statement said. The federal prosecutors' office added that "the carrying out of the (European arrest warrant) will certainly not be done immediately. The timeline is not at all fixed." It is even possible that Abrini could stand trial in Belgium first before being handed over to France, the spokesman said. Alternatively, he could be sent to France to assist in the investigation into the November Paris attacks claimed by the Islamic State group that left 130 people dead. Another key suspect linked to both the Paris and Brussels killings, Salah Abdeslam, was extradited to France in April. Abrini was linked to the Paris massacre after being caught on video at a motorway gas station on the way to the French capital with Abdeslam. Abdeslam, a French national of Moroccan origin who grew up in Belgium, is believed to be the last surviving member of the terror squad that hit cafes, a concert hall and the national stadium in Paris on November 13. According to Abia official sources, the Governor,Dr Okezie Ikpeazu will this morning, flag off a Free-Lunch programme for primary schools in the state at Amapu -Ntigha Primary School in Isialangwa North Local Government,as part of his campaign promise to provide free meals for indigent pupils. "The Governor believes that such programme will further improve on the well -being of the pupils, while providing jobs for women in the state, as the eggs, rice and all ingredients must be grown in Abia State," Mr Ikechukwu Iroha, former Special Assistant to the Governor on New Media, was quoted as saying. "It's also another way of encouraging food production in high scale". Meanwhile, Abians have been commending the Governor on the Free -Meal Initiative. According to them, the program couldn't have commenced at a better time than now Nigeria is experiencing serious economic hardship. "Ikpeazu is a man of the people. He understands the plight of Abians in particular and Nigerians at large. And this is one way of saying he identifies with their economic challenges",Member,Secondary Education Management Board,Comrade Chidi Ukomadu, said. Similarly,Lagos based business man,Mr Boniface Chinyereugo, also hailed the initiative, while appealing to public -spirited Nigerians to support the laudable project. "Yes,its encouraging. The Governor needs to be supported. Well -to- do Nigerians, especially Abians, should adopt schools for the purpose of the Free Lunch". Also, speaking, the traditional ruler of Mgboko Oria- Efula Autonomous Community, HRH Eze Ngozi Mathias Nwoko gave kudos to Governor Ikpeazu for feeding Abia school children, especially those in the rural areas. "The Governor has done very well. And we can only thank and encourage him. The Free Meal Program is on point and well appreciated by Ndi Abia". THE GAZETTE learnt that, the Free Launch Initiative, proposed earlier by Dr Ikpeazu, was initially delayed to enable government fix the schools and make them more conducive for learning before embarking on the humanitarian exercise. Critics of the program are, however, sceptical as regards its funding, impact and sustainability, given the prevailing national economic quagmire. With additional Report by Gladys Ogbonna (Abia Bureau Chief).

Welcome to mjventertainment.blogspot.com:IBB still alive, says aide ON JUNE 9, 20169:47 AMIN NEWSCOMMENTS MINNA — FOR the second time in less than two months, the rumoured death of former military president, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida has once again rented the air through some social media postings but with a swift reaction from his Hill top residence in Minna, Niger state that he is still alive, hail and hearty. One of the social media sites had, yesterday, indicated that the former military president had died in Germany and that he would be buried in Minna his home town today by 2pm. Reacting to the rumour, spokesman of the General, Alhaji Mahmud Abdullahi, described the development as a figment of lies by the authors who are only out to spread falsehood about the man. He said, “General Babangida is an international figure whose identity cannot be hidden whether alive or dead. I can tell you categorically that Gen. Babangida is alive and had crossed over from Germany to Switzerland two days ago without any problem and infact, he spoke with many in Minna today, (yesterday). I can also tell you that nobody will hide his death from anybody. If IBB drops dead today, it will not take more than five minutes to announce it and the burial rites.” General Ibrahim Babangida (rtd), On April 24 this year, Gen. Babangida while reacting to his death reports told journalists that the rumour did not shock him neither did it bother him because death is the end of any human being. “The rumor does not shock me neither does it bother me because I know I must go and meet my creator. There is nothing really to worry about because my religion has told me much about death and we must all go at the appointed time. “Therefore as a Muslim, I strongly believe everybody has to die. It could be now or in hundred years time or two days to come but the time doesn’t matter because nobody can predict that day or time,” IBB stressed. When our correspondent visited his Hill top residence, everybody was going about his or her official duties normally except for the low vehicular movement around the residence which is characteristic of the Ramadan period and the absence of the General from the country. File photo: 10-year-old girl molested by her father for about 18months “I asked her why she was not in school and the victim narrated to me that she lost her mother, was staying with her step-mother in Agege, a suburb of Lagos and needed money to go back. buses-today. “She added that her father had been having sex with her for more than one and half years and that she almost died from the previous night’s experience, as her father had sex with her more than three times.” Justice Kudirat Jose of Lagos state High Court sitting in Ikeja was told on Thursday, June 9, how Gbadegesin, 40, had sexual intercourse with his daughter for 18 months. The witness further told the court that when he asked the girl of her father’s whereabouts, she told him that her father’s commercial bus was parked a few meters away from the bus stop and that he had gone to get fuel. Adamolekun told the court that with the help of four other people, they forced the victim’s father to the police station in a tricycle. Welcome to mjventertainment.blogspot.com...REPORTS TURKEY SYRIA REFUGEES Issued on 07-06-2016 • Modified 07-06-2016 to 12:09 Time stands still in Turkey's Elbeyli refugee camp by Anne-Marie Bissada Residents hang their laundry out in front of their container, Elbeyli refugee camp. Anne-Marie Bissada/RFI In the middle of wheat fields and pistachio farms, just a few kilometres from the Turkish-Syrian border you'll find the Elbeyli refugee camp. Or as the Turkish authorities refer to it, 'facility centre'.   The calmness of the countryside is a stark contrast to the chaos on the other side of the border, where a civil war, in its fifth year now, has forced thousands to flee, leaving behind their homes, cities and loved ones killed from the fighting. 'Everything is supplied' Unlike the refugee camps run by the United Nations, Elbeyli and other centres run by the Turkish government provide more facilities and amenities to the residents, but are tightly controlled. Access by non-residents to the camps is only granted via special authorization by the government. With a capacity of 25,000 residents, Elbeyli currently houses 23,000. According to those running the camp, the centre is seen more as a permanent set-up rather than a temporary one. Upon arrival, each family is provided with a container to live in rather than a tent. In each container there is a bathroom/toilet, and bedroom, so a family of four might be alright. Of course, if it is a big family, the conditions are cramped. The sand-coloured containers are stacked beside each other much like a trailer park, with laundry hung up in front. It's not like a camp since all amenities are provided, including 24 hour emergency care and hospitals. In this centre, people get a chip card that issues 85 Turkish lira (26 euros) about every month. There are two markets in the camp, which means families can buy what they need– items from outside cannot be brought in. Orhan Cavit Gurbuz, a spokesperson at the centre, say it’s easier for people to live here than to go to the next major town of Gaziantep because "everything is supplied". To live in  town, you have to rent a house, 500 turkish lira minimum. You have to find a job to work. But here little money, but you can survive with this little money." INSIDE THE ELBEYLI REFUGEE CAMP © Anne-Marie Bissada/RFI Items made by residents for sale. © Anne-Marie Bissada/RFI Entrance to Elbeyli refugee camp © Anne-Marie Bissada/RFI Row of containers © Anne-Marie Bissada/RFI Play ground in Elbeyli © Anne-Marie Bissada/RFI Inside the kindergarten © Anne-Marie Bissada/RFI Kindergarten children singing © Anne-Marie Bissada/RFI Women at weaving carpets © Anne-Marie Bissada/RFI Zeinab and her brother Erdogan © Anne-Marie Bissada/RFI Items made by residents for sale. © Anne-Marie Bissada/RFI Entrance to Elbeyli refugee camp Previous Next The grid system of the containers is organised into districts, which falls under the supervision of a resident, known as a Muktar. Muktars rule Each Muktar is elected by the refugees and is also a resident of the camp. The chief of Muktars at Elbeyli is Tamer Mohamed Abouehg. Once the mayor of a town in Syria’s Idlib region, and an Arabic teacher, he is now in charge of overseeing the needs of his people in the camp. I ask him if this system – which provides everything – creates a culture of dependency. He explains that "of course it's a natural process. When you get used to these kinds of standards, you get lazy. But for those who get out and find jobs, they work. But for those who don't work, they get lazy." School at the centre is free, with classes in Turkish for children in kindergarten. As I enter one of the class rooms, the pupils are singing a song in Turkish and then in English. Eda Shuhmelioglu is one of the kindergarten teachers. Overcoming trauma She has been working with the children right from when they arrive to the camps. She says she tries to create an environment of love and positivity to help them open up to learning a new language, and of course, overcome the traumas they may have just lived through. "It takes six to seven months to learn to speak Turkish. For them to learn a song, it's about two weeks. Now they are at a good level where you can sit and talk to them in Turkish", adds Shuhmelioglu. After kindergarten level, classes are taught in Turkish or Arabic. But if students continue to learn Turkish, they can get qualifications that will allow them to enter a Turkish university. Duggu Tasdelen is in charge of one of the schools. She explains that 44 students have already graduated and are now studying at the university enrolled in programmes "varying from health to engineering." She explains that while at school, "their families remain here, and they come to visit them during holidays." The students are supported through a Turkish government scholarship. Because they have only been around for three years, Tasdelen says “we don't have anyone who has yet graduated." All the residents have access to medical facilities which include two psychologists and a social worker. Fikret Gelebi is one of the social worker here. She says although school is free, it cannot be enforced, adding that "the first priority is to encourage them [children] to go to school, but if they don't want to or their families forbid it, they can come to the arts and crafts centre to learn a trade to earn some money. But school is available both in the morning and in the afternoon." Apart from the education facilities, there are four centres dedicated to arts-and-crafts, including carpet-weaving, painting, and needlework. In the carpet-weaving room, women are busy working on the looms as they chit chat alongside one another. The atmosphere is lively as they exchange the latest gossip while their young children look on. It’s there that I notice 14-year-old Zeinab, who’s clutching her little brother Erdogan - named after Turkey’s president. I ask her why she's not at school today. She says "I am the oldest out of my nine brothers and sisters, so my father will not let me go to school since I have to help out my mother with the family." Women at the camp can make a little extra cash selling their crafts. Over in the camp’s art room, there are paintings for sale. This too can help people earn a little money. Some of the pictures seem bright and hopeful, while others show images of death and war. When I ask Tamer if he thinks Syria has future, the warmth in his face drains and he looks at me straight in the eyes, saying "when I look at Syria now, I see nothing. There is no land, there is nothing there." While life at Elbeyli and other centres run by the Turkish government provide the amenities to sustain its residents, it does little to give the Syrians hope for the future.

Welcome to mjventertainment.blogspot.com........French suspected terrorist held in Ukraine by RFI Ukrainian and EU flags fly in front of the Presidential Administration in Kiev Reuters/Valentyn Ogirenko A Frenchman is being held in Ukraine after being caught transporting a large quantity of explosives and weapons across the Polish border. He admitted plans to launch terror attacks in France, sources told a French TV channel that cited evidence that he had far-right sympathies. The 25-year-old Frenchman is currently held by Ukrainian police after being arrested at the Polish frontier on 21 May and could be extradited to France. At least three rocket-launchers, about 100 detonators, more than 100 kilos of TNT, half a dozen Kalashnikov assault rifles and a number of balaclava helmets were found in his car, according to the M6 TV channel which broke the story on Friday. Ukrainian security services had spotted him several days earlier and suspected he was trying to buy weapons. M6's sources said he admitted planning attacks on French territory. A search of his home in eastern France found material for making explosives and a T-shirt with the logo of a far-right organisation, the channel reports. He has no criminal record and was not on the security services' radar. A source told the Reuters news agency on Saturday that it was not "totally established" that a terror attack was being planned. Obasanjo is a frequent quest in the presidential villa. READ ALSO: President Buhari meets with prominent men of God (Photos) He has visited the incumbent president five times since the inauguration on May 29, 2015. The first visit was on August 8 and next on September 8 and November 10, 2015, and the latest came on April 6. The two politicians did not get along very well when Obasanjo was the president. Buhari lost to Obasanjo in the 2003 presidential poll and lost again to president Umaru Yaradua who was endorsed by Obasanjo four years later. Those two elections were marred by irregularities.
