WORLD Smoke detected on EgyptAir plane before crash Steph Solis, USA TODAY 1 hour ago Facebook Twitter Google Plus more France's aviation safety agency said EgyptAir flight messages showed smoke on board MS 804 minutes before the plane crashed into the Mediterranean Sea, Agence France-Presse reported. Egyptian Defence Ministry via epa The Egyptian Navy searches for missing EgyptAir flight MS804 off the Egyptian coast, north of Alexandria, Egypt. "There were ACAR messages emitted by the plane indicating that there was smoke in the cabin shortly before data transmission broke off," a spokesman of France's Bureau of Investigations and Analysis told the AFP news agency Saturday. ACAR stands for the Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System. The digital system transmits short messages between aircraft and ground stations. It comes two days after the Airbus A320 filled with 56 passengers and 10 crew members crashed into the sea shortly after entering Egyptian airspace. It was flying at 38,000 feet when it swerved left 90 degrees, then right a full 360 degrees before descending thousands of feet to the ground and going off radar. Photographs released by the Egyptian Army show how little remains of the devastation —just mangled bits of debris, tattered clothing and a lifevest, among other remains. They also are focusing on tracking down the Airbus A320's black boxes, which have two hours of voice recordings from the cockpit. The recovery of the black boxes is crucial to finding out what happened in the fateful moments before the plane crashed. But the black boxes will only ping for a month when the batteries run out. Authorities are investigating the possibility that the flight was brought down by terrorists, which some officials say could explain the plane's erratic movements before the crash. Egyptian Civil Aviation Minister Sherif Fathi said the possibility of a terror attack as the cause of the crash is "higher than that of a technical error." Still, investigators have not confirmed that they have any evidence proving terrorism is to blame. No militant organization has claimed responsibility for the crash. When Russia’s Metrojet charter Flight 9268 plummeted into the Sinai desert, an insurgent group affiliated with the Islamic State claimed responsibility for bringing down the jet.
